Composite Catalog: A single source for oilfield equipment specs
Gulf Publishing Company launched the Composite Catalog of Oil Field Equipment and Services in 1927 as a way of capitalizing on the success of its new products and services section, and show equipment guides, in The Oil Weekly.
The catalog was distributed free to key men “supplied by oil companies, themselves, or upon request of individuals who have positions of buying power and influence.” GPC summarized the benefit of the catalog to the purchasing manager as being “a complete library on the equipment of a large number of manufacturers, properly indexed and available for quick reference.”
In just a year, GPC did not have to promote the Composite Catalog, because the equipment manufacturers were doing it by referencing the catalog in the ads that they were running in The Oil Weekly.
