Digital pen for data capture

The Capturx Digital pen from Adapx is a product for automating paperwork. Powered by Anoto functionality, Capturx software helps oil and gas teams streamline their field inspection and service data capture so they can improve operational visibility, service equipment more efficiently, and ensure proper compliance documentation. With the digital pen, oil and gas producers, pipeline operators and service providers can instantly capture data handwritten on ordinary paper forms, maps and engineering plans. The data can be transmitted immediately from the Bluetooth-enabled pens to the back office using cell phones or USB connections with PCs and laptops. The data is automatically integrated into the original Microsoft Office 2010 files, PDF files, GIS system, or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server.

Multipole sonic-while-drilling service

Schlumberger has released the SonicScope 475 multipole sonic-while-drilling service. This new logging-while-drilling (LWD) service provides multipole measurements to consistently and reliably deliver compressional and shear data in all environments. SonicScope 475 utilizes a dedicated mode for acquiring Stoneley waveforms while drilling to ensure high-quality data before washouts can develop. Compressional and shear data, with the Stoneley wave acquisition, enable the assessment of rock mechanics and characterization of fractures. This is especially crucial in the North American shale plays for designing complex completions to optimize future production. In addition, a while-tripping mode provides multipass analysis and top-of-cement evaluation.

Fastener resists shock, heat, vibration

A new internal thread form for the oil industry enhances reliability even in super alloys by combating vibration, thread loosening and extreme temperature without the need for secondary locking features. Spiralock self-locking threaded fasteners have a re-engineered thread form that adds a 30° wedge ramp at the root of the female thread, which mates with standard 60° male thread fasteners. The wedge ramp of the fasteners allows the bolt to spin freely relative to female threads until tension is created in the male fastener. The crests of the standard male thread form are then drawn tightly against the wedge ramp, eliminating radial clearances and creating a continuous spiral line contact along the entire length of the thread engagement. This spreads the clamp force more evenly over all engaged threads. The fasteners are resistant to corrosive saltwater environments, and are available in stainless steel.

Torque measurement and control

The Rigworks Sentry Torque System is designed to operate entirely in a digital domain for enhanced accuracy and versatility on rotary-driven drilling rigs. More than a standalone sensor, the system is a torque measurement and controller system with a standard analog frequency and digital outputs. It is capable of being interfaced with the automatic drilling system to control drillstring torque. It is the first such system to read true torque on the drillstring through the rotary table. This helps eliminate over-torque on the drillstring to prevent damage on the threaded joints. With an accuracy of ±0.05,  the system can monitor real-time torque from any drilling location, in torque ranges up to 200,000 ft-lb. All data is saved for future reference. It features simple installation on most rotary-driven drilling rigs, and is compatible with most drilling rig monitoring systems.

Thread stabbing guide

K&B Machine has introduced the K&B Stabbing Guide, a simple and cost-effective solution that reduces the margin of error in drilling operations. With the Stabbing Guide, the chance of cross-threading or mis-stabbing pipe is virtually eliminated. Even in rough seas and bad weather, the tool helps maintain control over pipe of up to 16 in. in diameter. Lightweight and easy to use, it features an aluminum outer frame and quick-change polyethylene inserts, available for pipe up to 16 in. It protects pin-end seals and coated surfaces and is versatile and durable, with low maintenance.

Portable data collection meter

GrayWolf has introduced a new handheld environmental meter, the AdvancedSense, an instrument that incorporates an embedded Windows OS to provide a broad range of enhanced productivity tools. The meter is suitable for applications such as indoor air quality assessment, worker exposure screening or general HVAC testing. In addition to optional built-in sensors (auto-zeroing differential pressure and barometric pressure) as many as 20 extra sensors may be connected simultaneously to the AdvancedSense in order to measure TVOCs, CO2 (for ventilation assessment), air velocity, particulates and specific gases  such as CO, O3, H2S, SO2 or NO2. Once information has been collected in the field, WolfSense PC software (supplied as standard) enables simple download, analysis and report creation.

Real-time data visualization for the oilfield

Reality Mobile has released Reality Vision 3.0. The real-time, mobile visual collaboration software platform offers oil and gas companies a way to instantly connect experts and employees at the push of a button during developing situations ranging from a downhole tool breakdown to a spill incident. The software creates a company-specific network from video and communications devices most companies already have in use, including fixed IP cameras, PCs and smartphones. The technology sits securely behind a company’s firewall and operates on available communications networks including cellular and satellite. Once connected, users can send and receive high-quality video from any device connected to the network, and prioritize video feeds and add comments to draw attention to critical areas.

Packing brochure

R&M Energy Systems is offering a full-color brochure that describes the features and benefits of the Hercules Gold Cone packing. The brochure also provides a selection criteria chart that ensures the proper selection of packing based on temperature limits, chemical concentration limits, mechanical tear and abrasive resistance. The Hercules Gold Cone packing provides better leakage control and longer performance life to meet critical oilfield requirements, regardless of the brand of stuffing box being used. Featuring small brass particles impregnated in and distributed throughout the packing, Hercules Gold Cone packing dissipates heat more effectively to extend packing life and keeps the polished rod smooth and free of abrasive mineral buildup. Additional features include: capability of handling temperatures up to 160°F; pressure-handling capabilities to 2,500 psi; and availability in sizes from 11/8 in. through 1¾ in. to fit all polished rods.

World’s largest roller-cone drill bit

Varel International has completed a massive 44-in. steel-toothed roller-cone bit for the oil and gas industry. The bit, which weighs in at more than 6,000 lb and is more than 22% larger in diameter than any previous roller-cone bit, was requested specifically by Saudi Aramco. This bit features an advanced cutting structure with optimized row placement, tooth spacing and cutter geometry for increased drilling efficiency. These attributes work to minimize tooth wear and prevent cutter tracking in a wide variety of formations and conditions. The ultra-large-diameter bit is designed to create efficiencies in current field operations by offering a single-bit solution to top-hole drilling in situations that previously involved drilling a pilot hole and then re-drilling with a hole-opening assembly.

Correction:

The January 2011 New Products & Services section contained an error. In the item entitled “Hardware-in-loop simulator for offshore rigs,” the first sentence should have read: “Machinery control software is an important cause of downtime and incidents aboard modern Gen 6 and Gen 7 deepwater rigs.”
World Oil regrets the error.
