Calgary’s GPS exudes size and technical substance

Agenda/preview for the Global Petroleum Show & 53rd Canadian International Petroleum Conference, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, June 11 – 13, 2002

Every two years, Calgary, Alberta, sets the stage for one of the world’s largest oil and gas events, the Global Petroleum Show (GPS). Formerly the National Petroleum Show, the 2000 version of this event attracted more than 60,000 industry professionals from 88 countries.

Due to its growing global scope, the name has been changed in time for the 2002 event, to be held June 11 – 13. GPS will act as a showcase for world-class technology in the fields of exploration, drilling, production and transportation of oil and natural gas. Historically held in the second week of June, the show has garnered enough of a worldwide audience for the city’s mayor to declare that the seven days be deemed "Petroleum Week."

Overview

GPS provides a venue for industry professionals to unveil the most diverse, innovative technological advances from across the globe. In addition to Canadian participants, the event will welcome industry leaders from the U.S., China, Mexico, Indonesia, Germany and Venezuela, to name a few.

As a show noted for featuring "iron," the event will house more than 250,000 sq ft of indoor exhibits and 250,000 sq ft of outdoor field equipment. The latter grouping will include rigs, pumping units, compressor stations and more.

GPS proves to be a venue of choice for industry deal-makers. Analysis has shown that more than 80% of show participants wield decision-making power for their companies. Thus, exhibitors see the event as a chance to interact with participants that want to increase production, improve field efficiencies and maximize profits.

The show will feature daily unveilings of new products and services at the Gulf Publishing Centre Stage Theatres, located in the core of Stampede Park’s Roundup Centre. Other highlights include a North of 60 Business Opportunity Centre and an International Business Centre, both set to ensure that cross-border networking becomes a reality for participants.

As per usual practice, the 2002 GPS will be held in conjunction with the Petroleum Society’s 53rd Annual Canadian International Petroleum Conference. Featuring the theme, Sustainable Growth: Strategy, People and Technology, the conference will host noted speakers to talk on the latest trends in the industry.

The Global Petroleum Show takes place in Calgary Stampede Park. Show hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on June 11 and 12, and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on June 13. To register for the show, or for more information, visit the GPS website at www.petroleumshow.com.

Special Features

For 2002, GPS will offer special features that have been incorporated into the show. These forums will offer key information on oil and gas opportunities in Canada and other countries, as well as provide a venue for individuals and/or companies to come together for some global networking.

North of 60 Business Opportunities Centre. This center provides a forum where entitlement corporations, regional governments and exploration companies can discuss business opportunities north of the 60th parallel.

Featuring representatives from northern stakeholder groups, this center is designed as an information source for producers, service companies or anyone considering expanding into this region. Bringing the two sides of northern exploration together, North of 60 will address issues, questions and hurdles related to doing business in Canada’s north, considered a "final frontier" in oil and gas exploration.

International Business Centre. International buyers from around the globe will be provided an opportunity to meet face-to-face with oil and gas experts from Alberta and Canadian-based companies. Hosted by Alberta Economic Development (AED), this center will provide a venue for business-to-business connections, as well as offer participants the opportunity to consult with provincial trade directors and federal trade commissioners posted abroad in key, oil and gas markets.

This year, AED has partnered with Industry Canada, Alberta Energy, the Canadian Commercial Corp. and Export Development Canada – all are expected to be on site to provide their expertise.

Gulf Publishing Centre Stage Theatres. Another unique GPS feature is the Gulf Publishing Centre Stage Theatres. Named in honor of World Oil’s parent company, the theatres will be in the center of the show floor. They will feature presentations that include case studies on new technologies pertaining to exploration, drilling, and production; environmental strategies; information technology and e-commerce; and a special feature on developments "North of 60" in Canada’s Arctic. Presentations covering technical and business issues will be free and open to all show attendees.

Foreign Buyers Program. The Gulf Publishing Centre Stage Theatres will also feature a series of market updates for participants during the three-day event. There will be a listing of these markets outlined on the show’s web site, at www.petroleumshow.com.

In addition, trade commissioners from all major producing countries will be on site for one-on-one consultations with show visitors and exhibitors interested in a specific market. A series of special networking receptions is also in the planning stage. Details can be found on the show’s web site.

The LaunchPad & Deal of the Day. Utilizing two formats, GPS provides participants with an opportunity to highlight their latest advancements, make groundbreaking announcements and recognize partnerships forged during the three-day event.

The first format is the LaunchPad, a platform designed for participants to unveil new products and services to key clients, industry VIPs and investors. The LaunchPad will also serve as an effective on-site showcase for exhibitors to provide key announcements and presentations pertaining to their companies.

In addition, the GPS "Deal of the Day" will be announced daily at 4:00 p.m. to all exhibitors and visitors. This format aims to showcase those individuals and/or companies that have come together during the show to forge a partnership. This can take such forms as one company providing another with a much-needed service, or two firms merging their technologies to create a more efficient product.

Canadian International Petroleum Conference

Held in conjunction with GPS, the Canadian International Petroleum Conference (CIPC) will house some of the industry’s best and brightest technology practitioners, as they gather to discuss the latest in upstream and pipelining advancements. Sponsored by Canada’s leading engineering technical association and show partner, the Petroleum Society of Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum (CIM), the conference’s theme is Sustainable Growth: Strategy, People and Technology.

Guest speakers invited to address the conference include the Hon. Murray D. Smith, Minister of Energy for the Government of Alberta, as well as Lloyd Axworthy, director of the University of British Columbia’s Lui Centre for the Study of Global Issues. In addition, Abdallah S. Jum’ah, president and CEO of Saudi Aramco, will provide a keynote address to conference participants.

Over 1,000 participants are set to attend the 2002 conference, which will house more than 100 relevant technical presentations. Topics will range from International Business and Oil Sands to Gas Development and Heavy Oil Cold Production (see table). The conference will act as a complement to GPS: It will not only showcase leading exploration and development technologies, it will also put into practice the applications of these technologies for participants.

Boasting more than 3,200 members worldwide, the Calgary-based Petroleum Society is committed to the technical advancement of its members and the industry through continued education, communication and dissemination of technical information.

In addition to technical presentations, the conference will also house special-interest sessions on Coalbed Methane and Safety, as well as a technical session on IT/Data Management. Several short courses and a Graduate Student Presentation Competition will also be featured.
