The U.S. Department of Energy Small Business Innovation Research Program has awarded a Phase I grant to E-Spectrum Technologies and Dr. Eduardo Gildin, associate professor in the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering at Texas A&M University, to create an advanced advisory system that accurately depicts underground conditions in real time during drilling operations.
Land rigs have evolved over the years, incorporating increasingly advanced technology with greater levels of digitization and automation. The evolution has been driven by the increased power/torque required for more complex borehole construction and extended-reach wells.
Wells drilled offshore Sabah, East Malaysia, using conventional open wellbore technology, have experienced well control events and significant NPT. Problems encountered included kicks, stuck pipe, and lost mud circulation.
