Longitude unveils AI-driven FPSO mooring monitoring system
(WO) — Engineering consultancy Longitude has launched a new real-time mooring line tension monitoring system for floating production units and has secured its first commercial deployment with an undisclosed South American operator.
The system, known as Proper Live Load (PLL), is designed to provide continuous monitoring of FPSO mooring line tensions and vessel movements, helping operators identify potential integrity issues before they lead to operational disruptions or equipment damage.
According to Longitude, traditional mooring monitoring programs often rely on periodic inspections and aging load-cell systems, limiting real-time visibility into mooring performance. The new platform combines vessel positioning data, mooring analysis models and predictive analytics to provide continuous monitoring and alert capabilities.
“We address this gap by providing an always-on monitoring platform that combines real-time sensor data with predictive analytics and comprehensive integrity management, enabling operators to shift from reactive to proactive mooring management,” said Icaro Reis, naval architect and marine engineer at Longitude.
The system utilizes onboard positioning sensors and integrates vessel motion data, mooring line tension calculations and excursion monitoring. Additional capabilities include alarm management, mooring line loss detection and monitoring of six-degree-of-freedom vessel movements.
Longitude said the platform can also incorporate wind, wave and current data alongside historical operating records and machine learning models to forecast vessel and mooring system behavior under expected operating conditions. The system is designed to support proactive maintenance planning through real-time fatigue tracking and tension-history analysis.
The company recently secured a one-year contract with an undisclosed South American oil and gas operator to deploy the PLL system on one of its FPSOs.
“PLL represents an important step in the development of new mooring monitoring technologies, combining our deep expertise in naval architecture and offshore engineering with advanced digital tools,” said Guilherme Leal, Longitude's operations director for the Americas. “Its first deployment validates our vision of a fully integrated, intelligent monitoring platform for the offshore industry.”
Longitude is the engineering and design division of ABL Group and recently integrated Brazil-based naval and marine engineering specialist Proper Marine into its operations.
