Eni confirms major Geliga gas discovery in Indonesia’s Kutei basin
(WO) - Eni has made a significant gas discovery offshore Indonesia, reinforcing the Kutei basin’s status as one of Southeast Asia’s most prolific deepwater plays.
The Geliga-1 exploration well, drilled in the Ganal block about 70 km offshore East Kalimantan, encountered an estimated 5 Tcf of gas in place along with approximately 300 MMbbl of condensate. The well reached a total depth of around 5,100 m in water depths of roughly 2,000 m, confirming high-quality reservoir characteristics in the targeted Miocene interval.
The discovery builds on a string of recent exploration successes in the basin, including Geng North and Konta, and supports Eni’s hub-based development strategy. The company is advancing both its North Hub and South Hub projects, which will tie into existing infrastructure, including the Bontang LNG facility.
Initial assessments suggest the Geliga discovery, together with nearby undeveloped resources, could support additional production of up to 1 Bscfd of gas and 80,000 bpd of condensate. Studies are underway to evaluate fast-track development options leveraging existing and planned infrastructure.
The result further strengthens Eni’s upstream position in Indonesia and underscores the basin’s growing role in regional and global gas supply.
