Petrobras confirms hydrocarbon discovery in deepwater Campos basin

April 13, 2026

(WO) — Petrobras has confirmed a hydrocarbon discovery in the pre-salt section of the Campos basin, following drilling of an exploratory well in block C-M-477 offshore Brazil.

The well, 1-BRSA-1404DC-RJS, is located approximately 201 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in water depths of about 2,984 m. Hydrocarbon presence was identified through electrical logs, gas shows and fluid sampling, Petrobras said.

Samples collected during drilling will undergo laboratory analysis to determine reservoir characteristics and fluid properties, as the company moves to assess the commercial potential of the discovery.

Petrobras operates the block with a 70% interest, in partnership with bp, which holds the remaining 30%. The acreage was awarded under Brazil’s 16th ANP bidding round.

The discovery adds to ongoing exploration efforts in Brazil’s pre-salt provinces, where operators continue to target new resources to support long-term production growth. Petrobras said the activity aligns with its strategy to replenish reserves through exploration in frontier areas.

Further appraisal and evaluation work will be required to determine next steps for the block.
