Seadrill alliance targets remote DP operations for offshore drilling
(WO) - Kongsberg Maritime, Seadrill and Hanwha Drilling have formed a strategic alliance to develop remote dynamic positioning (DP) technology for offshore drilling operations, aiming to improve safety, efficiency and operational performance.
The collaboration will focus on developing the technical and regulatory framework needed to enable remote DP operations, where vessel positioning systems can be monitored and controlled from centralized onshore locations. The companies said the initiative could help establish new operating standards for offshore drilling.
The partnership will combine Kongsberg Maritime’s automation and communication technologies with the operational experience of offshore drilling contractors Seadrill and Hanwha Drilling. The companies aim to create centralized DP processes designed to reduce workload for offshore crews while improving decision-making and operational reliability.
Dynamic positioning systems are critical for maintaining the precise location of offshore drilling units without anchors, particularly during deepwater operations. Remote DP capabilities could allow operators to manage positioning systems from centralized control centers while maintaining safety oversight offshore.
The companies said the initiative represents an early step toward more automated offshore drilling operations, with the potential to support safer and more efficient deepwater drilling activities.
