Expro to deliver geothermal well testing for Vulcan Energy’s Lionheart project in Germany
(WO) - Expro has secured a contract to provide geothermal well testing services for the first Schleidberg well in Vulcan Energy’s Lionheart project in Germany, supporting one of Europe’s largest combined geothermal and lithium extraction developments.
The Lionheart project, designated under the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act, aims to integrate geothermal energy production with lithium extraction to supply critical minerals for the energy transition. Expro’s scope includes delivery of its GeoFlow™ surface well testing system to support reservoir characterization, fluid analysis and performance evaluation.
The well testing program will provide key subsurface data to help optimize geothermal output and assess lithium-bearing brine potential, a critical step in advancing commercial-scale development.
“We are proud to support VERCANA GmbH and Vulcan Energy on this landmark geothermal development,” said Andrei Ion, Expro’s managing director for Europe, Mediterranean and Caspian. “This project demonstrates how traditional oilfield services such as well testing and intervention can be adapted to unlock geothermal resources and critical raw materials like lithium.”
The work will be executed through Expro’s regional teams, leveraging capabilities from its well flow management and well intervention segments. The company said the project builds on its growing geothermal portfolio in Europe, where demand for subsurface expertise is increasing as operators pursue low-carbon energy solutions.
Marco Köpsel, managing director of VERCANA GmbH, said Expro’s technical capabilities will play a key role in the project’s early phases. “The expertise and innovative solutions provided by Expro will be instrumental in unlocking the geothermal and lithium potential of this initiative,” he said.
The award highlights the expanding role of oilfield service providers in geothermal and critical minerals development across Europe.
