IPAA: Biden fails to recognize importance of U.S. oil and gas in State of the Union address

March 08, 2024

(WO) – In response to President Joe Biden’s comments on climate and oil and gas in his State of the Union address on Thursday night, Jeff Eshelman, President & CEO of the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) issued the following statement:

IPAA President and CEO Jeff Eshelman

“We are disappointed President Biden didn’t recognize the importance of America’s oil and gas global leadership. For a President who ran on inclusion, and with a goal of stitching the nation together again, nothing could be further from reality regarding the treatment of America's oil and natural gas businesses.

“Instead, President Biden continues to divide us - making it clear his administration is playing a game of picking winners and losers. It has created failed government subsidies for wind, solar, and electric vehicles but, meanwhile, threatens to punish consumers who choose to use oil and gas to heat and cool our homes, cook our food, and for the vehicle we drive.

“Let's unite America and recognize all forms of energy for the role they play in providing Americans affordability, reliability and environmental progress. A broad and realistic portfolio will make the United States and its allies strong and prosperous for decades to come.”

The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) is a national upstream trade association representing thousands of independent oil and gas producers and service companies across the United States. Independent producers develop 91% of the nation’s oil and natural gas wells. These companies account for 83% of America’s oil production, 90% of its natural gas and natural gas liquids (NGL) production, and support over 4.5 million American jobs.
