HOUSTON -- National Oilwell Varco (NOV) has announced the opening of a new service center in Pleasanton, Texas. The new center, which is the ninth Quality Tubing facility of its kind, is strategically located to service coiled tubing customers in the Eagle Ford shale play. Based on the center’s location and capabilities, customers will be able to reduce nonproductive time (NPT) in the field, due to servicing strings by more than 50%—down to one or two days from the typical four or five.

The new service center offers a comprehensive range of services, including finished goods inventory, spool and string storage, spooling, maintenance programs, string repair, testing and inspections, and various coiled tubing equipment, nitrogen equipment, and iron services.

On Sept. 24, NOV celebrated the first spooling job at the new facility by long-time customer Quintanna Energy Services (QES). Luke Kuhlman, manager of operations engineering for QES, noted that the new facility will provide the company with several significant benefits.

“With coiled tubing jobs becoming more challenging, a facility like this is going to be critical. We’re able to turn what used to be a three-to-four-day downtime period traveling to Houston into a two-day period traveling to Pleasanton, helping us save on permitting and trucking costs. More importantly, the shorter duration allows us to be back to location quicker.

Possibly the most beneficial aspect of spooling in Pleasanton is the reduction of exposure we have traveling to Houston. In today’s market, such large units—14-ft wide, 250,000 lb or more, and over 100 ft long—are the new normal. Reducing the amount of time these units are traveling down the highways and through the Houston metro area is a win/win for us as well as the rest of the commuters trying to avoid these oversized loads. We look forward to using the Pleasanton service center and to the same top-notch service we’ve always received from Quality Tubing.”
