Flat Time Reduction launches Lean Oilfield Solutions

HOUSTON -- Flat Time Reduction (FTR), a Houston-based engineering and management consulting firm, has developed a new system tailored specifically for the oil and gas industry, based on the proven methodology behind lean manufacturing.

Called Lean Oilfield Solutions, the system simplifies traditional lean manufacturing and encompasses the following areas:

  • Optimization of large scale high-risk operations.
  • Simplification of complex repetitive tasks.
  • Implementation of effective front-line change.
  • Sustainment of gains and promotion of forward-thinking.

The system was developed over the span of three years, and is based on actual field data collected by FTR’s engineering team. Combining oilfield and cross-industry lean experience, the industrial engineers at FTR constructed the system with a goal of increasing the success rate of lean implementation in oil and gas, particularly in the upstream segment.

The concept stems from FTR’s experience implementing traditional lean manufacturing and seeing first hand its effectiveness in multiple industries. Although initially effective in oil and gas, FTR began experiencing some challenges to successful implementation within the industry, including resistance to change, an over-abundance of traditional lean tools, and commodity pricing. Through the realization of these challenges, and a growing demand for improved industry efficiency, FTR developed Lean Oilfield Solutions as a methodology customized specifically for the oilfield.
