CONSOL’s Appalachian basin operations certified by CSSD
PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania -- CONSOL Energy has announced the certification of its operational practices in the Appalachian basin by the Center for Sustainable Shale Development (CSSD).
The certification, which is independently validated by Bureau Veritas, confirms CONSOL's compliance with 15 CSSD performance standards related to environmental stewardship of air and water. These standards have been designed to exceed the regulatory minimums established by state and federal regulatory bodies.
"By demonstrating it has met CSSD's 15 performance standards, CONSOL Energy has shown that in 15 critical areas, its Appalachian basin operations meet or exceed state and federal air and water management regulatory requirements," said Susan LeGros, CSSD president and executive director.
Nick DeIuliis, CONSOL’s president and CEO, commented, "We constantly strive to push the envelope in terms of innovation, and to go above and beyond the regulatory baseline that governs our operations. This CSSD certification is clear recognition of that commitment, and of our commitment to being a good neighbor and true partner in the communities where we live and work."
Like all companies that earn CSSD certification, CONSOL Energy's certified operations must continue to adhere to CSSD's performance standards in the Appalachian basin, integrating CSSD's publicly available best practices into its long-term continuous improvement processes. CSSD will monitor adherence and continue to build and expand on its initial 15 performance standards.
Certification is valid for 24 months, after which companies can seek renewal. During the 24-month period, there is at least one assurance audit to make sure conformance with the standards is being maintained.
The CSSD is a collaborative of environmental organizations and energy companies, which encourages responsible practices in the development of shale gas resources in the Appalachian region. CSSD officially opened its certification process in January 2014.
