3D LWD enables precise geosteering and accurate well placement

Halliburton has introduced 3D reservoir mapping, an LWD capability that provides a detailed representation of the subsurface to improve well placement in complex reservoirs. 3D inversion reveals overlooked features, such as faults, water zones, or local structural variations that can alter a well’s optimal landing trajectory. In geosteering applications, the technology maximizes contact with hydrocarbon zones while mapping the surrounding formation to identify bypassed oil, avoid drilling hazards and plan for future development. The 3D capability originates from downhole measurements taken by the EarthStar resistivity tool, an LWD sensor that identifies reservoir and fluid boundaries up to 225 ft from the wellbore. This range doubles the depth of detection of current offerings. A North Sea operator recently deployed the 3D capability in a field with a long history of production and water injection. The data allowed the operator to better assess the movement of reservoir fluids and visualize fault boundaries, which supported more accurate well placement and increased production.

Produced water technology provides cost-effective solids removal

Exterran has launched its Separon produced water technology line to provide operators a complete water and solids management solution. The company’s suite of technologies now includes de-sanders, de-oilers, multiphase hydrocyclones and microbubble flotation technology for oil and solids removal. It offers onshore and offshore operators a ready-to-use, turnkey package of solutions to treat up to 750,000 bwpd. Separon products include a unique solids removal, which enables operators to remove and transport solids from production fluids. This cost-effective solution mitigates multiple issues downstream, including instrument failure, erosion, corrosion, and pump damage, all of which reduce vessel tank maintenance. The company’s equipment has treated over 5 Bbw and recovered 21 MMbo, worldwide.

Inspection software for hazardous areas extends asset life

Arnlea has launched its upgraded IntrinsixEX inspection software, helping companies comply with ATEX industry regulations and IEC 60079 standards as part of the management of hazardous areas and equipment. Updates to the software include the ability to capture photographs, to allow new and old images of items to be viewed and compared. In addition, recent enhancements to RFID Bluetooth readers are now compatible with IntrinsixEX, offering greater document storage capacity.

Gyro-while-drilling tool reduces survey time, increases accuracy

Gyrodata released its Quest system, a solid-state gyro-while-drilling (GWD) tool. The technology is the company’s second product that utilizes its SPEAR solid-state technology. The innovative technology reduces gyro surveying time and the error of ellipse for increased precision, accuracy and speed.  This improved accuracy helps operators avoid crossing lease lines, suffering frac hits and missing hydrocarbon-rich target formations. The solid-state sensor package is not affected by shock and vibration or magnetic interference. Quest GWD also reduces the ellipse of uncertainty by up to 154%, compared to other types of MEMS GWD systems, while being nearly three times faster to perform surveys.

Continuous circulation system enhances foam drilling techniques

Adrilltech has launched a Non-Stop Driller that uses a continuous circulation system to enhance foam drilling techniques. The system has been applied successfully with zero HSE incidents, increased average ROP and significantly reduced stuck pipe/lost BHAs incidents on 22 wells in the Papua New Guinea Highlands region. While drilling surface sections from 40 m to 1,500 m in harsh environments, the Non-Stop Driller has reduced connection time from 40 min. to just 10 min., saving between 15 hr and 21 hr in overall time spent drilling each section.   Over the duration of the project, the tool has drilled over 105 sections and made over 850 connections, with a 95% success rate. The system is also used to mitigate total losses in fractured carbonate formations, and reduce invisible lost connection time and NPT related to stuck pipe from hole collapse. The Non-Stop Driller has made 4,500 connections for nine different operators on five continents, with a 97% success rate.

Enhanced multi-gas detection instrument protects field engineers

GMI, a company within the 3M personal safety division, has released an enhanced version of its PS200 multi-gas detection instrument. The PS200 features a powerful new datalogging capacity that enables users to capture all relevant calibration and session data over a 6-month period. This increased capacity improves access to relevant data. The device also has a new quick-press field calibration mode, which saves time by simplifying the calibration process. Users also will be able to visualize their short- and long-term exposures to CO2 and H2S, to quickly determine current exposure rates and take appropriate action.
