IIoT-enabled connected services remotely monitor flow meter performance
Emerson has introduced its IIoT-enabled Connected Services to support multiphase flow meters in unconventional shale. The Roxar 2600 Multi-phase Flow Meter Performance Monitoring Service leverages cloud-based technologies to remotely monitor flow meter performance at the wellhead. It provides operators with actionable recommendations to optimize meter performance, enabling proactive maintenance, based on advanced, continuous data collected from an onsite multiphase flow meter and analyzed remotely by the company’s experts. These experts can now remotely deliver advanced diagnostics, data interpretation and reporting from the multiphase flow meters on a regular schedule. According to Emerson, the service offers solutions for well testing, unmanned wellhead platforms, production metering, wellhead monitoring and shale applications.

New well intervention system deployed offshore
Well-SENSE’s offshore FiberLine Intervention (FLI) system has successfully completed its first round of commercial projects. The system uses fiber optic technology to take distributed temperature, pressure and acoustic measurements across the entire length of a well, then transmits the data to the surface in real time. Because it is completely disposable, using bare line and materials designed to dissolve in the well environment, costs are reduced significantly, using FLI. Well-Sense reportedly has conducted multiple offshore FLI projects for several major companies. The projects have included DTS surveys for flow profiling on two unmanned gas lift wells off the coast of Malaysia. They also include a selection of leak detection surveys, capturing DTS and DAS data, to determine leak points in producing wells and wells on the verge of P&A in the North Sea. The company reported that operations took an average of 3 hr, compared to the anticipated 12 to 14 hr for wireline logging. It also delivered additional well insights, allowing the operator to consider new production optimization options.

New armor cladding alloy enhances bit strength, lifespan
Smith Bits, a Schlumberger company, has introduced a new armor cladding alloy that significantly improves bit body design flexibility and erosion resistance, increasing ROP and bit durability for longer runs. Composed of a proprietary tungsten carbide material, the company says Aegis cladding increases bit erosion resistance by 400% and strength by 40% when compared to conventional, matrix, polycrystalline diamond compact bits. It also enables bit designs with taller blades and optimal nozzle placement, which results in more efficient cuttings evacuation that improves ROP. According to the company, Aegis cladding has undergone extensive field testing across five North American shale basins. It also has been field-tested in Europe, the Middle East and South America for both onshore and offshore applications.

New subsea lever hoist provides highest safety level
William Hackett has launched SSL5, a new lever hoist offering the highest level of safety and performance. With the world’s first quad pawl (QP) mechanism, the company says it is being touted as the world’s safest, most efficient offshore and subsea lever hoist. The QP mechanism synchronizes a set of four pawls, which work together constantly to minimize the time and distance travelled to the next point of engagement. Because it can overcome jams and other malfunctions commonly seen with single-use immersion hoists and other simpler products, the SSL5 hoist helps to minimize project downtime and significantly reduce capital investment. According to the company, the hoists have been subjected to rigorous multi-immersion tests and inspections. A customer-controlled field trial also was conducted, during which the hoists were immersed 12 times over a 60-day period.
