Integrated wellbore pressure management for onshore drilling

Weatherford International plc has announced the commercial release of the PressurePro control system, a fully integrated rotating control device (RCD) and choke system for wellbore pressure management on land. The control system combines the SafeShield 5M RCD, which has a 5,000-psi rating, with the PressurePro set-point choke. The system can be used for managed pressure drilling, underbalanced drilling and foam drilling applications. With semi-automated functionality, the system does not require specialized personnel, continual supervision or manual adjustments. Before drilling, the user inputs the desired pressure set point and, during drilling, the system automatically senses changes in downhole pressure. It instantly adjusts the choke to maintain wellbore pressure within plus-or-minus 5 psi of the set point.

Pressure test barriers increase safety

Blast Control provides pressure-test barriers that safeguard personnel, save money and simplify operations. These barriers are constructed using textiles and materials that make them pliable, mobile and efficient. The barriers can be applied in places where no feasible solutions exist with traditional materials. The products have proven to have the same projectile stopping capability of ¼-in. steel or 4 in. of reinforced concrete, and yet only weigh about ¾ lb/ft2. This makes them easy to move around and apply to any situation. This capability of these products lies in the core materials that are cut-resistant, abrasion resistant and efficient when absorbing energy. The company offers modular pressure test enclosures, deployable frac barriers, offshore manifold curtains and high-pressure line wraps, along with many other custom barrier systems.

Drill bit increases reliability in high-energy applications

Halliburton has announced the release of GeoTech High Energy (HE), a robust drill bit that incorporates new features and materials to deliver enhanced performance and increased reliability in today’s high-energy drilling systems, characterized by high weight-on-bit and drilling torque. Both the matrix and steel platforms incorporate unique design geometries focused on high-energy systems. The new matrix body incorporates a blend of materials, and the new steel body is machined from an advanced alloy material. Both are formulated for increased strength and durability under high torsional and axial loads.

Monitoring system focuses on underreamers

National Oilwell Varco (NOV) introduced the IQ Monitoring System, the industry’s first wear and vibration monitoring product for underreamers, as part of ReedHycalog’s borehole enlargement services. A unique sensor arrangement within the underreamer cutting structure captures underreamer performance characteristics, including tool wear, acceleration, and status, to better understand the root cause of downhole tool attrition. The IQ system’s detailed performance data allows customers to implement objective strategies to use their tools more effectively, prolong operational life of equipment, and eliminate nonproductive time events. A companion application on any smartphone, tablet, or laptop can be used on the rig for rapid analysis of drilling parameters, vibration severity, and tool diameter after a run. The system was recently used in high-pressure and high-temperature applications in the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea, with the operators in both projects eliminating the need for the secondary reaming runs typically required in offset wells.

Integrated seat technology ball valve improves performance

Schlumberger has released the GROVE IST integrated seat technology ball valve. The new technology features a patented seat-on-ball design that improves performance over conventional metal-seated ball valves, in addition to offering considerable size and weight benefits. Conventional ball valves tend to become larger in size and weight, as oil and gas companies explore harsher environments. The new ball valve overcomes these conditions with its seat design that provides advanced sealing performance and increased valve lifespan, while minimizing size and weight, enabling customers to reduce total cost of ownership. The ball valve has undergone an extensive qualification test program that qualifies the full product range to API 6A PR2 for performance, API 6AV1 for slurry testing, and API 607/6FA for fire testing.

IOR/EOR solution designed to enhance downhole performance

Linde North America Inc., and Nissan Chemical America Corporation have joined efforts to enhance downhole performance with the nanoActiv HRT (Hydrocarbon Recovery Technology) solution, combined with CO2 and nitrogen (N2). The technology primarily enables the recovery of hydrocarbons through the processes of Brownian motion, diffusion-driven disjoining pressure, and fragmentation—all combined in one mechanical sweeping effort. The use of CO2 or N2 in hydraulic fracturing allows for maximum surface area to increase the flow of hydrocarbons and delivers flexibility in solution viscosity for more uniform proppant placement, avoiding blockages and keeping fractures open.

Perforating system advances safety, stage efficiency, success rates

Hunting Energy Services has reported that operators using its Titan Division’s H-1 perforating system have performed more than 38,400 runs since its introduction last year. The operators have used the system without any safety-related incidents and with fewer personnel. The system provides operators with an advanced, select-fire perforating gun system that has no wires from gun to gun, fewer connections, no exposed detonating cords and real-time shot verification. It addresses common causes of mis-runs by eliminating the potential for pinches or nicks in the lead wire, reducing the risk of O-ring seal-point failures, and providing more precise operational confirmation downhole.
