Cased-hole formation evaluation and monitoring tool operates without a rig

Schlumberger has introduced the Pulsar multi-function spectroscopy service at the SPWLA 58th Annual Symposium. The new offering is a complete, cased-hole formation evaluation and reservoir saturation monitoring service, with open-hole logging quality. The pulsed neutron logging features multiple detectors and a high-output, pulsed neutron generator to improve acquisition accuracy while increasing both logging speed and measurement precision. The service measurements are complemented by algorithms that compensate for variations in the borehole fluids and completions to make reservoir monitoring in complex conditions a reality. The new service simultaneously obtains self-compensated, traditional cased hole measurements, an expanded suite of elements including total organic carbon (TOC) and the new, fast neutron cross-section (FNXS) measurement. Directly sensitive to the volume of gas in a formation, the FNXS measurement differentiates and quantifies gas-filled porosity from liquid-filled tight zones without requiring any openhole data input.

Drilling fluid tester targets fluid loss, bridging capacity

Drilling fluid tests have numerous important facets, and increasingly significant property measurements are fluid loss and, by extension, the bridging capacity of the fluid being tested. Low fluid loss and minimal loss of whole fluid are integral parts of modern drilling fluid design and have become vital performance criteria. Considering the current industry-specified testing to characterize the performance of both fluid loss and bridging capability in a drilling fluid, combined with the risk in working with compressed gas in certain locations, Vertechs has developed the High Pressure Invasion Tester. The device depends on generating a mechanical force to a confined test body that applies pressure up to 900 psi to the fluid sample. The results are visible in the inspection tube, and the equipment is portable. The test medium is sized sand or ball bearing, and an additional slot test is in the R&D process. The device requires no compressed gases and no electrical outlet, can be delivered to any location, and poses minimal risk to the user. It can be used to test untreated drilling fluids and assess the effect of adding loss-prevention products when troubleshooting downhole problems.

EOR cased-hole evaluation system utilizes five-detector array

Weatherford International has commercially released the Raptor 2.0 cased-hole evaluation system. The system, which has been tested and proven in more than 200 field runs, combines a pulsed-neutron wireline logging device with advanced petrophysical workflows, a range of answer products, and support from a team of experienced production petrophysicists, to provide actionable reservoir data. The system’s wireline logging tool features a five-detector array, which makes the system 250% more sensitive than traditional, two-detector pulsed neutron tools. By providing high-fidelity oil-water and gas-liquid saturation measurements, the system enables operators to increase reservoir insight during completion, production and rejuvenation operations.

Off-grid communications trailer operates with fuel cells, solar power

Simark Controls Ltd., a subsidiary of SFC Energy, a provider of hybrid power solutions to the stationary and mobile power generation markets, has announced the receipt of an order for fuel cell/solar hybrid EFOY ProTrailer mining communication trailers and EFOY ProCabinets by their wireless network partner, 3D-P. Hybridization of SFC Energy’s EFOY Pro fuel cells with solar allows for significantly longer autonomy than battery banks powered by solar, alone. In times with insufficient solar power output, the fuel cell automatically switches on, reducing costly downtime and maintenance intervals by avoiding the deep discharging of the battery. This power reliability significantly increases the trailer’s autonomy. Excess heat from the fuel cell is used to keep the insulated battery and electronic compartments warm. The 3D-P trailer can be easily and cost-effectively deployed anywhere in remote locations. 3D-P custom configures each unit for the customers’ specific load requirements and geographic locations.

Software optimizes production via integrated seismic, decision-making

Emerson Automation Solutions has launched the latest version of its reservoir characterization and modeling software, Roxar RMS 10.1. Through advances to the seismic, to flow simulation workflow and to versatile decision-support tools, the software enables collaboration and integration between domains to support optimal decision-making. It also delivers greater ease of use and performance. Features include enhanced seismic resolution on horizons and faults for more accurate interpretation; better Snap-to-Seismic capabilities where guide points can be displayed in 3D, as well as on intersection views to improve interpretation and quality control; new structural modeling features through robust pinch-out modeling; and uncertainty representation around faults. The result is complete data integration and no information silos, allowing field planning decisions to be based on the best possible information.

Non-triazine H₂S scavenger improves solids control, scaling

Clariant has introduced an alternative to triazine H2S scavenger chemistry that potentially has substantial benefits for oil producers. The new Scavinator increases overall production with less downtime, due to improved solids control and reduced potential for mineral scaling. It is a water-soluble scavenger for removing sulfide species from both gases and liquids, and is used to control hydrogen sulfide. It can be applied in batch form (contact tower) or injected continuously into pipeline streams. Unlike triazine, it does not have a propensity to produce solid reaction by-products. In addition, it has a minimal impact on pH, which reduces associated mineral scaling. This combination enhances production and minimizes downtime linked to pipeline cleaning and solids removal.
