Microfluidic analysis automates sample-testing

Schlumberger has released the Maze microfluidic SARA analysis for reservoir fluids characterization, which is the industry’s first commercial application of microfluidic analysis technology. The technology fully automates the process for testing oil samples for saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes (SARA), coupling novel microfluidic technology with spectroscopy. This method eliminates human subjectivity, enabling precise SARA measurements, while decreasing turnaround time and use of chemicals by more than 85%. Results from the Maze microfluidic SARA analysis have industry-wide applications, including validating oil samples prior to PVT analysis, understanding physical and refining properties, assessing crude oil value and supporting flow assurance and geochemical studies.

Petrophysical software delivers advanced data management

CGG GeoSoftware has launched PowerLog 9.5, the new version of its flagship well log petrophysical analysis software. Designed for multi-user environments, it drives collaboration among petrophysicists, geophysicists, geologists and reservoir engineers for better reservoir understanding. The software includes new features for better data management, improved asset team collaboration and streamlined workflows. A new sandbox implementation increases interpretation speed and helps guarantee the integrity of a company’s log database, by allowing individual users to transfer wells to local projects, interpret the wells, and then transfer results back to the central database. Additionally, new shale volume determination methods enable more robust clay determination, which is particularly useful for unconventional reservoirs.

Rider winch lifts rig personnel cost-efficiently

Ingersoll Rand has introduced the new LS2-150 Hydraulic Land Rig Man Rider Winch, a cost-effective solution for safely lifting people working on onshore drilling rigs. Safety features include an overload protection device, which prevents the winch from operating if it detects a load that exceeds 125% of the 330-lb safety rating; an emergency stop button; a slack line prevention system, which helps prevent the rider from falling if the winch line gets caught or snagged; redundant braking, which provides added safety with two independent braking systems; and a press roller, which presses the wire rope onto the drum to help prevent bird-nesting. Additionally, durable materials encase the essential internal and external components of the winch, and built-in lifting lugs make it easier for an operator to move the winch and wire rope, when necessary.

Copper-based drilling compound resists corrosion

BESTOLIFE Corp. has released a new, premium, copper-based drilling compound, HONEY KOTE. A specially formulated compound, it provides maximum protection against seizing, galling and load-bearing stress on drill collars and drill pipes. The formula resists corrosion, providing an added benefit of long-term storage protection for threaded surfaces in a variety of conditions. Additionally, it applies easily in a wide variety of temperatures and working conditions, and will not run off or bleed at high temperatures, nor will it harden in storage. In addition to resisting water wash-out and corrosion, it has been pressure tested, successfully up to 25,000 psi.

Petrochemical analyzer enables broader analysis

A universal petrochemical analyzer, G908—which combines high-pressure mass spectrometry (HPMS) technology and the power of ballistic gas chromatography (GS)—has been introduced by 908 Devices. The combination provides fast compositional analysis, improving efficiency and providing cost savings. With G908, users can rapidly perform testing in-line, at-line, in the laboratory and at remote field locations. Operators can monitor process streams for specific compounds, detect problems quickly and facilitate immediate action when necessary. It enables broader analysis capabilities by positively identifying and quantifying a range of analytes, including low-level impurities.

Valve & seat delivers increased operational service life and pumping hours

Weir Oil & Gas has released the new SPM 2.0 valve & seat for well stimulation pumps, used in shale plays worldwide. Designed and manufactured from premium-grade materials and processes, the valve & seat encompasses a one-piece, patent-pending design, proprietary polymers and innovative geometry—all of which work together to create a long-lasting expendable. Through extensive testing, the new technology is a vital component for helping companies maximize return on investment by delivering longer operational service life and increasing pumping hours. Benefits include bonded valves; increased resistance to abrasion, extrusion and flow erosion; and the elimination of molding movement, leakage and separation from the valve.

Centralizer subs improve performance in challenging wellbores

Antelope Oil Tools has expanded its CentraMax product line with the CentraMax RT1 (rotating), PI1 (push-in) and PT1 (pull-through) centralizer subs. The sub series is designed to run in extremely tight-tolerance, deepwater well applications and ultra-narrow annular clearances—usually when the annular clearance is smaller than ¾ in., or less than the material stack. Antelope installs the centralizers directly onto the threaded sub body, which reduces the centralizer’s material stack, allowing it to safely, and effectively, pass through the narrow ID restrictions. The centralizers are produced from single-piece, heat-treated steel, which minimizes potential weld and component failures, providing optimum performance for the most challenging wellbore configurations.
