C. Maury Devine has joined the Technip board of directors. Her career includes executive positions with ExxonMobil, the US White House and the US Department of Justice. She spoke to World Oil about upcoming changes in the oilfield sector. “Over the next decade, I expect governments will try to increase revenues by discontinuing incentives and subsidies and by raising taxes on carbon fuels. At the same time, there will be an increase in safety regulations because the public is demanding just that,” Devine said. “Given this context, the industry will face increasing pressure on costs and on margins, and we will have to offer our products and services in a more energy-efficient manner. Innovation is now, more than ever, the key factor to respond to this new business climate. Shale gas is a good illustration of industry innovation. New technologies and new approaches to some of our intractable problems of supply and distribution are the best answers to increased government regulations and actions.” Asked how oilfield operators and service companies could work together, Devine replied, “One of the most successful things is to establish long-term agreements. That’s what Technip has done with Shell in FLNG by signing a frame agreement for up to 15 years, or with Statoil in Brazil for engineering studies, and with BP for the spar platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. These relationships should not only aim to increase energy production, but also to cope with safety and environmental issues.”
