Directional system enables real-time optimization in challenging environments

National Oilwell Varco (NOV) has introduced the iSeries NXT platform to its portfolio of Tolteq MWD/LWD directional systems and tools. The NXT platform enhances the function of the iSeries platform with improved capabilities that support additional measurement types, enabling real-time drilling optimization in challenging applications. Legacy-compatible, the platform is available with a directional module that provides inclination and azimuth information, together with increased directional measurement accuracy; a top-mounted pulser that increases data transmission speeds while increasing shock and vibration resistance; and a pressure-while-drilling (PWD) sensor that complements the top-mounted pulser to enable real-time annular and internal bore pressure measurements while drilling. When integrated with the PWD sensor, the system allows operators to monitor critical downhole conditions, such as hole cleaning, and to detect fluid influx or lost circulation conditions. The directional module provides increased directional survey accuracy for enhanced management of tight well spacings or tolerances, while continuous measurements provide positional information while rotating and sliding, and reduces NPT associated with frequent surveying. Additionally, improved data transfer rates deliver real-time optimization data to the surface faster, improving decision-making and safety while allowing crews to drill more effectively.

Subsea well capping technology available to OSRL members

Oil Spill Response Limited (OSRL) has announced that its latest development in subsea well capping technology is now available to its members. Designed specifically for scenarios where direct vertical access to a wellhead is not viable, the new Offset Installation Equipment (OIE) enables capping or related equipment to be installed at a safe distance from an incident. Developed in collaboration with the Subsea Well Intervention Project (SWRP), OIE is now available to OSRL members through a Subsea Well Intervention Services (SWIS) supplementary agreement. Current OIE members include BP, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Petrobras, Shell, Statoil and Total—all of which represent the founding members of SWRP. OIE can be deployed up to 500 m from an incident site and is suitable for use at a working depth of 75 to 600 m. Importantly, OIE is also fully-compatible with OSRL’s capping equipment, creating an end-to-end capping and containment solution suitable for almost all subsea scenarios. The OIE will be stored and maintained in Trieste, Italy, by oil and gas industry specialist, Saipem, which has extensive experience operating in harsh environments, remote areas and deep water.

New P&A service approach saves operator time and money

Ardyne, provider of innovative plug-and-abandonment and slot recovery technology, has saved more than a day of rig time on a planned three-and-a-half day operation and has improved efficiencies 35% for UK-based operator Fairfield, with the help of its Casing Recovery Toolbox. Now working on the decommissioning of the North Sea’s Greater Dunlin Area, Fairfield’s fully-funded, multi-phase decommissioning project includes complex challenges, with opportunities to apply advanced technological solutions and innovation to end-of-life work. The operator was seeking an oilfield services partner that could drive best practice in decommissioning, resulting in improved efficiencies and cost savings.

Gas analyzer combines detection and monitoring

Baseline has introduced the latest addition to its PetroAlert Series gas analyzers. The new Series 9200 PetroAlert gas analyzer combines the selective detection of a gas chromatograph (GC) with the continuous monitoring abilities of a total hydrocarbon analyzer (THA) in a single, compact, sensitive and stable instrument. The analyzer is specifically engineered to meet the requirements of the exploratory well-logging process. Its speed and accuracy allow well loggers monitoring a drill site to analyze the hydrocarbons within a well, both quantitatively and qualitatively, while drilling. That ability makes for a more efficient drilling process and more timely evaluation of a well’s potential. The new analyzer incorporates dual-flame ionization detectors (FIDs): one dedicated to the GC and the other dedicated to total hydrocarbon measurement. The GC performs C1 to C5 analyses in less than 30 sec, preserving the C1-C2 separation at a 200-to-1 concentration ratio and with a detection limit of less than 10 ppm as methane. The total hydrocarbon detector continuously monitors total hydrocarbons, down to 0.003%, and up to 100% as methane.

Electric engine designed for land drilling

Caterpillar Oil & Gas’ Cat 3512E Tier 4 Final Land Electric Drilling engine is manufactured in the company’s flagship facility at Lafayette, Ind. The engine meets EPA T4 final emission standards with the proven NOx reduction system (NRS), which is commonly referred to as exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology. NRS technology doesn’t require a secondary fluid like diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to meet emissions regulations. “For land drilling applications, NRS technology is better suited, due to the highly demanding and remote nature of the applications,” said Diana Hopkins, land drilling and production marketing manager for Caterpillar Oil & Gas.  “The most critical requirement from our customers was to meet emission regulations with no disruption to operations, reliability and durability,” Hopkins said. The 3512E is now available to purchase through the global Cat Dealer Network.
