OTC.08 POST-SHOW REVIEW

ASME-IPTI presented two awards at OTC

Hoisting and lifting technology innovations received the top awards this year from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers-International Petroleum Technology Institute (ASME-IPTI).  The awards were presented at a dinner during this year’s OTC.

The Woelfel Best Mechanical Engineering Achievement (BMEA) Award was presented to Yantai Raffles Shipyard Ltd. of Shandong, China, for its new Taisun fixed dual-beam gantry crane with multiple hoists.

ASME awards judges surround Jon Khachaturian and Tom Cheatum of Versabar on the OTC floor to commemorate Versabar’s award for distinguished innovation.

Phil Carpentier, past chair of the Petroleum Division of ASME and member of the judging panel for the BMEA, joins Niels Haakman of Yantai Raffles and Al Woelfel to celebrate Yantai Raffles’ victory in the BMEA category.

The Taisun crane will impact large offshore projects, such as semi-submersibles, with its capability to join super sections of up to 20,000 MT in a controlled and cost-effective way that improves both man-hours and build schedules significantly.

The Woelfel Distinguished Innovation Award was presented to Versabar, Inc. of Houston, Texas, for its “Bottom Feeder” device, a new lift system for heavy-lift salvage operations. WO
