Nissan’s Game Changing Nanotechnology in the Oilfield

Nanotechnology is an emerging area of research and interest in the oil and gas industry. Nanotechnology refers mainly to engineered particles that range from 1–100 nanometers in size. A nanometer (nm) is one-billionth of a meter, equivalent to one-millionth of a millimeter, and one-thousandth of a micron. Nissan Chemical began manufacturing nanoparticles in 1951, making it one of the first companies in the world to produce highly surface-modified particles for industrial applications. Their years of experience, proprietary materials, and patented technologies have helped them become a worldwide leading provider of refined nanoparticle solutions.

Their exploration efforts in the application of nanoparticles in the oilfield led to the introduction of nanoActiv® solutions. nanoActiv® solutions are high-efficiency intervention additives and methods. They employ inorganic nano-sized particles in a colloidal particle dispersion, harnessing their power to penetrate porous media on a nanoscopic scale. nanoActiv® particles form a Brownian-motion, diffusion-driven mechanism known as disjoining pressure—greatly facilitating and accelerating the mobility of gas, oil and water, or mixtures thereof. The dispersion of brine-resistant colloidal particles when mixed into treating fluids, form orderly hexagonal arrays which act mechanically to exert a large spreading force. This pressure lifts and enables the removal of hydrocarbons for enhanced and improved oil and gas recovery.

Nissan Chemical America Corporation (NCA) is a division of Nissan Chemical Corporation (NCC), which was founded in 1887 as the first chemical fertilizer manufacturer in Japan. A forerunner in chemical innovations for nearly 130 years, Nissan Chemical currently manufactures products for the chemical, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries and is a market leader in high quality nanotechnology products for the automotive, coatings, electronics, and oil and gas recovery industries.
