New system introduces automated pipe make-up, connection evaluation
Weatherford International plc announced the commercial release of the AutoTong system featuring AutoEvaluate connection-make-up software. The system is the world’s first technology to automate pipe make-up and provide autonomous connection evaluation. Using the new system, the final pipe-make-up process is initiated with the push of a button. The system autonomously determines the appropriate connection parameters, based on the pipe and thread criteria specified by the OEM. Providing complete control throughout the final make-up sequence, the system continuously monitors torque and adjusts the rotational speed of the casing to achieve the optimal torque value. The integrated software automatically evaluates the connection quality, based on high-resolution data.
Electromagnetic inspection tool finds defects in range of casing sizes and properties
Probe Technologies Holdings, Inc., a supplier of logging and reservoir monitoring technology, has introduced the iQ, a multi-purpose inspection tool that provides quantitative measurements of well casing thickness and inner diameter (ID), as well as a comprehensive analysis of casing material properties. The tool operates in high-pressure wellbores, including those in highly deviated and horizontal wells, up to 20,000 psi, and in temperatures as high as 175°C. Quantitative electromagnetic (EM) casing ID and properties are assessed through multi-frequency measurements and inversion, and quantitative quadrant casing thickness is assessed and corrected by measured casing properties. It was developed in response to demand for a quantifiable, reliable and cost-effective intelligent well integrity evaluation solution in North America. It is available in 2 3/4-in. and 3 1/2-in. tool sizes and can identify defects in a range of casing sizes.
Remote underwater technology applied to subsea controle module
Cohort company SEA has developed a configuration of its Subsea Electronic Module (SEM), using batteries and acoustic communications to provide a stand-alone package that is suitable for interrogation by an ROV or AUV fly-by. The power and communications configurations for the package employ technology previously used and proven by the company on similar applications. The Subsea Control Module (SCM), includes a SEM and Master Control Station (MCS). It provides a new, low-cost and short lead-time module, designed to extend the lives of marginal developments and late-life oil and gas fields. Through the use of standard plug-and-play components, various elements of the control system can be used across a range of subsea applications. These include stand-alone control and monitoring for small pool applications, where standardization, and re-use are becoming key factors, along with price and performance.
Downhole testing added to subsea services
C-Kore Systems recently expanded application of the company’s subsea testing technology to include downhole testing. The new application was tested on Total’s K5F field, offshore the Netherlands. The testing units helped locate the source of low IR on the downhole system by plugging directly into the subsea Christmas tree, eliminating the need for downlines. The handheld, pre-programmable units were installed by divers, who located the fault quickly, with limited diving time.
Partnership integrates data systems
Oil and gas software firm iLandMan is now offering nationwide well data and status information, thanks to a new integration with geoscience data company TGS. This technology relationship provides iLandMan’s E&P clients with streamlined access to well information and status data directly from TGS’s database. These integrated well features now activate automatic notifications and lease functionality in iLandMan. The partnership aims to help companies manage their lease terms and conditions in a timely manner, reducing the risk of losing mineral acreage.
Cognitive E&P environment enables collaboration across teams
Schlumberger recently unveiled its new DELFI cognitive E&P environment. This environment enables collaboration across E&P teams and leverages the full potential of all available data and science to optimize assets. The environment utilizes digital technologies, including security, analytics, machine learning, high-performance computing (HPC) and Internet of Things (IoT) to improve operational efficiency and deliver optimized production. The cognitive environment will strengthen integration between geophysics, geology, reservoir engineering, drilling and production domains. The openness and extensibility will enable operators and software partners to add their own intellectual property and workflows. With the addition of this new cognitive environment, the service company has deployed an E&P data lake on the Google Cloud Platform, comprising more than 1,000 seismic surveys, 5 million wells, 1 million well logs and 400 million production records globally.
O&M database maps major UK energy facilities
The Energy Industries Council (EIC), a trade association for companies that supply goods and services to the energy industries worldwide, has launched its newest business development tool, EICAssetMap. It is an interactive operations and maintenance (O&M) database that maps all major UK energy facilities across all sectors (oil and gas, power, nuclear and renewables), the only database of its type to do so, according to the association. Users can search for facilities by location, sector and operator. The database, which is updated daily by the association’s expert analysts, charts the full lifecycle of energy facilities from start-up through to decommissioning. It also provides contact information for the site operators and contractors.
