Fully dissolvable frac plug debuts

Halliburton’s completion tools business line has introduced the Illusion frac plug, the only fully dissolvable frac plug on the market. The 10,000-psi-rated product shortens the time to production by eliminating the need to mill out plugs after fracturing. This leaves an unrestricted bore for production, and since no intervention is required to clean the wellbore after the frac, risk is reduced and production is brought on sooner. It also provides zonal isolation for reservoir stimulation and combines Halliburton’s frac plug designs with advanced, dissolvable metal and rubber materials. According to Halliburton, this next-generation technology is expected to save operators time and money.

Subsea wellhead set to launch

Plexus Holdings plc has announced that the POS-GRIP Python subsea wellhead is projected to be launched Sept. 8, during the SPE Offshore Europe trade show in Aberdeen, Scotland. The wellhead is designed to address key technical issues and requirements, highlighted by regulators, following the Gulf of Mexico incident in April 2010. The wellhead has been under development since 2011, within a JIP supported by major operators and service company consulting partners, including BG, Royal Dutch Shell, Wintershall, Maersk, TOTAL, Tullow Oil, Eni, Senergy and Oil States Industries Inc. Plexus anticipates that the wellhead will be ready for offshore deployment in a trial well during 2016.

Services improve complex seismic interpretation

Schlumberger has launched its Depth Domain Inversion Services. Petrotechnical experts use the services to improve the reliability and consistency of seismic structural and quantitative interpretation in complex environments. Performing seismic inversion in the depth domain fully integrates the inversion with the imaging products, to improve the estimation of rock properties for reservoir characterization. According to Schlumberger, this is done by correcting for depth space and dip-dependent illumination effects during seismic amplitude inversion, directly in the depth domain. According to Schlumberger, the new services already have been applied successfully in complex geological environments in North and South America.

Liner system with swage technology

Weatherford International has introduced the commercial release of the IntegraLine liner system with swage technology. According to Weatherford, the IntegraLine liner system is designed and engineered specifically for critical environments. It provides dependability in critical applications, such as ultra-deepwater, extended-reach, and sour-gas wells with high pressures and temperatures. It is comprised of three premium components: the polished bore receptacle, liner-top packer and rotational hanger. The packer features swage sealing technology that forms an anti-extrusion, gas-tight barrier between the outer diameter of the packer body and the inner diameter of the host casing, which reduces the number of equipment failures that may threaten well integrity. Alternative components are also available to create a fit-for-purpose liner hanger solution for specific applications.

Well surveillance services improve performance

Sentry Well Surveillance Services, a real-time ESP and optimization service, has just been launched by Summit ESP LLC. This 24/7 monitoring service is designed to increase production, improve ESP run life and reduce cost. Data are collected from artificial lift operations, then necessary information is provided to optimize production and minimize field downtime. The surveillance engineers on the Sentry team have access to a complete 360° view of every well’s operational information, downhole equipment, application design and field service history. Other service features include full, remotely controlled ESP set point capabilities; custom and recalibrated alarms for all operating parameters; performance analysis with flowrate modeling; and multiple SCADA systems that store key operating parameters in a centralized database for remote monitoring.

Proppant technology reduces produced water

The oilfield technology group of Hexion Inc. has released AquaBond, a new resin-coated proppant. This proppant utilizes a resin chemistry that reduces the production of formation water, while maintaining production. This ultimately reduces waste water storage and disposal costs. Proppant flowback control, reduction of proppant fines generation, minimization of embedment, and enhanced well production are also features of this new proppant technology. It is available in 20/40, 30/50, and 40/70 mesh sizes.

X-ray fluorescence technology confirms strata mineralogy

NUTECH has added new X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technologies to its proprietary POROLABS core analysis solutions, for identifying the characteristics and composition of rock to confirm the mineralogy of the strata. The XRF machine provides a complete analysis of reservoir rock composition data and lateral well sections. This enables full comprehension of the hydrocarbon potential of the strata. Insight provided by this technology also can be used for optimizing proper frac spacing and targeting the well location within the stratigraphic column. The XRF analysis solution uses high-energy x-rays, or gamma rays, to reflect  and filter chemical components of the rock to scan for elements. These are then reviewed and included in an algorithm to predict the mineralogy and lithology of the well.

Downhole measurement suite improves wellbore placement

Ryan Directional Services, a Nabors company, has released the AccuSteer MWD Measurement Suite. It delivers downhole measurements for wellbore placement and optimized drilling. The suite provides accurate MWD measurements for continuous inclination, shock and vibration, azimuthal gamma, downhole pressure, resistivity, and drilling dynamics. The tool has the industry’s shortest overall length at 30 ft (33 ft with resistivity), and it offers improved wellsite handling and BHA control. This technology comes with smart telemetry, enabling data sequence changes while rotating and sliding, so that only necessary and pertinent information is sent. It provides all measurements needed for accurate wellbore placement and maximum pay zone contact. This increases production rates and ultimately extends the life of the well.
