DNV Software has released Sesam GeniE 6.4, a product that enables design engineers to use one single model for the design, modification and life extension of offshore and maritime structures. One of the key features of the new Sesam GeniE release is the ability to work inside a consistent user interface. A typical example of this functionality includes the handling of connections between pile and leg, as well as the disconnection of beams and plates. The data model can be produced by Sesam GeniE, or imported from several supporting systems. Part of the integrated one-model solution allows tension and compression analysis to be carried out inside Sesam GeniE. The integration element helps reduce superfluous investments in separate systems, thereby cutting cost on unnecessary licenses and training.

Joint integrity portal microsite launched

Hydratight has launched a new microsite dedicated to joint integrity. The Joint Integrity Portal will act as a one-stop-shop for all Hydratight bolt load and joint management software and services. The microsite showcases Hydratight’s software portfolio, including:  free access to the Boltup site for basic bolt load calculations on standard ANSI flanges, bolt-load calculation software Informate (Pro and Classic formats and iDMS, Hydratight’s flagship data management system, due for commercial release later in 2013. The idea of the portal was born out of the need for a medium dedicated to delivering Hydratight’s bolt load and joint integrity management software solutions.

New PPC bit design reduces vibration

Ulterra has introduced CounterForce, a new PDC bit design technology that utilizes a unique cutter configuration to lower bit torque and vibration, creating more efficient failure of rock. Unlike traditional PDC bits, the cutters of this patent-pending, step-change advancement in PDC technology work together to lower lateral vibration and increase crack propagation. The CounterForce cutting structure is engineered to slice through rock, while maintaining a more consistent torque signature, to increase stability and ROP. CounterForce technology improves drilling efficiency and is being incorporated into many Ulterra PDC designs. Early field runs have shown CounterForce-designed U519M bits drilling with improved toolface control and sliding ROP. In an Eagle Ford tangent drill-out interval, a CounterForce bit set a rig ROP record, drilling 41% faster than the closest offset, and saving the operator 15 hr and $50,000. In a Permian basin Wolfcamp lateral, a CounterForce run finished the lateral with 42% faster ROP than direct offsets, saving the operator an entire day of drilling.

Tech group releases new weekly weather report

EarthRisk Technologies has released TempRisk U.S. Weeklies, a weekly report that provides comparative data, for all U.S. regions, on weather trends, regional correlations and long-term forecasts. The product offers clients a simple-to-understand multi-week weather analysis, with comparative charts, weekly highlights and actionable takeaways. The TempRisk U.S. Weeklies includes all of the TempRisk U.S. regions in a side-by-side forecast comparison with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). It provides data in quick-view maps and charts, with weekly highlights and expert analysis. Forecast comparisons are divided by weeks, and aligned by target dates. TempRisk hit rates for each region are compared to ECMWF temperature ranges relative to normal, based on specific lead windows.

Schlumberger releases new E&P knowledge management solution

Schlumberger has released Studio Manager, which delivers information management capabilities for the Studio E&P knowledge environment. The program allows information management professionals to proactively track asset team progress, and resolve data issues, working interactively with users of the Petrel E&P software platform. The Studio environment allows E&P experts to find all relevant data, collaborate with peers, and capture and share best practices in the context of their current Petrel workflow. Indexing technology provides access to both structured and unstructured data in Studio repositories, as well as third-party applications and data sources. As part of the standard commercialization process, the Studio Manager capabilities tested included managing data quality and database integrity, while at the same time seeing how asset team members are using and sharing technical information.

Heavy-duty oblique icebreaker introduced

With construction underway on the first-ever oblique icebreaker, Aker Arctic Technology has unveiled a new version of the unique vessel type that will bring ice management and pollution control to a new level in thick, first-year ice. The first ARC 100 is due for delivery to the Russian Ministry of Transport in early 2014, after a collaborative build involving Kaliningrad’s OJSC Yantar and Helsinki’s Arctech yards. The resulting newbuild is a breakthrough in asymmetric three-thruster conceptual design, which will bring new capability to terminal operations, ice management and oil spill response in freezing seas. The 76-m vessel, with her oblique ice-breaking action, improves year-round oil spill response.
