HPHT memory gauge

Kuster Company introduced the first fully hybridized High-Pressure/ High-Temperature 20,000-psi downhole memory gauge. The K10 Quartz HPHT 200°C hybrid gauge records pressure and temperature to memory in extreme conditions for extended periods of time. The gauge is manufactured from Hastelloy C-276 and Inconel 718/Incoloy 925 alloys, which are fully H2S and CO2 resistant. Unlike surface-mount electronics, the hybrid components are not encapsulated in plastic; the electronics are hermetically sealed in a high-strength enclosure with metal-to-metal seals for high-pressure sour service applications. This significantly increases the life of the circuit in harsh environments. Utilizing a Quartzdyne digital hybrid quartz pressure transducer, the design incorporates a rugged, high-temperature FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). The electronics can be pre-configured to acquire samples at a specified fixed interval. Operating with a low-voltage 200°C-capable lithium battery, the gauge utilizes the same PC software as existing Kuster K10 Series gauges.

Fracturing control service

BJ Services Co. and Baker Hughes Inc. have launched the IntelliFrac service, an integration of fracturing and production-enhancement services from BJ with microseismic services from Baker Hughes. The combined offering enables operators to monitor fracture dimensions during stimulation treatments and allows real-time control of fracture operations. During hydraulic fracturing, the service monitors and measures the microseismic events that indicate key fracture properties, including azimuth, height, length, volume and complexity of the induced fractures. Once the data set has been gathered and processed, operators can use it to optimize field development plans, and potentially reduce the number of wellbores required to develop the field.

Improved reamer shoe

Downhole Products (DHP) has introduced a modification of its Pen-O-Trator line of reamer shoes with the inclusion of an enhanced aluminum nose with pre-stressed zones on the exterior surface. The design assists in the break-up of the reamer shoe’s aluminum nose during drill-out of the shoe-track following cementing. The engineered pattern of stress zones allows the aluminum to fracture into small pieces when the drillbit encounters the inside of the nose. The smaller pieces are more easily milled, drilled and evacuated from the wellbore. Previous reamer shoes have occasionally caused problems when large pieces of aluminum broke out and spun beneath the drill-out bit, greatly reducing penetration. In those cases, the PDC cutters affixed to the drillbit would sometimes get coated with heated aluminum, reducing their cutting efficiency. Other features of the reamer shoe include surge reduction enhancement, penetration by reaming past obstructions with or without rotation, an integral float valve, and anti-aggressive left-hand blades. The tool’s slick body eliminates solids buildup. It can also include an optional integral low-torque centralizer, dynamically positioned circulating ports for effective hole cleaning, and a self-cleaning cutting structure. The reamer shoes are available in sizes from 65/8 in. to 20 in.

Three-screw crude oil pipeline pump

Colfax Corp. has begun production of the world’s largest rotary positive-displacement three-screw crude oil pump. The Imo 8L-912Y pump can be installed on pipelines up to 24-in. diameter and transport more than 85,000 bopd at pressures up to 2,000 psi. The pump allows the transport of more viscous fluids using less energy than when using centrifugal pumps, since the hydraulic principle behind screw pump operation delivers both high volumetric and high overall operating efficiencies. In addition, Imo 8L series pumps offer long mean time between repairs and ease-of-maintenance features. Other features include: constant flow, even in the presence of varying system backpressures due to changes in viscosity; nonpulsating flow, without the need for pulsation dampeners; and low noise and vibration levels, minimizing foundation requirements. The pump does not require an external lube system, and can be direct-coupled to a synchronous-speed driver, without a gear reducer, reducing the overall footprint of the equipment. Pump performance can be further controlled with the use of a variable-speed drive to dial in the required flowrate.
