New version of slim-well technology

Caledus is developing an 11¾ × 13 3/8-in. version of its SlimWELL technology, which slims down the well profile while maintaining well integrity and intervention ability. The new version will be the largest product in the SlimWELL range. It will complement the existing 5½ × 7-in. and 4 × 5½-in. models, which form the commercially available system SlimWELL SideTRACK, a series of close-clearance flush-jointed liners delivering a larger pipe size at the zone of interest from a cased-hole sidetrack.

Subsea pigging and hydrostatic testing

Halliburton’s Subsea Pigging Unit (SPU) and Subsea Hydrotesting Unit (SHU) are technologies for remote flooding and testing of newly fabricated pipelines in water depths up to 2,000 m. The SPU has the capability to filter and chemically treat flooding water while continuously regulating and monitoring the flooding and pigging operation autonomously, and without the need for umbilicals or constant attendance by a support vessel. The SHU allows hydrostatic testing operations to be completed entirely on the seabed, moving the risks posed by high-pressure fluids to a location far removed from personnel. The unit uses the power available from an ROV to operate pumps within the SPU/SHU unit. The ROV is used to control the rate of pressure increase in the pipeline by varying the flowrate provided by the ROV-driven pressurizing pump. Once the pipeline reaches its hydrostatic test pressure, the ROV may be disconnected and used for other activities such as visual location and confirmation of any suspected leaks. The hydrostatic pressure may be monitored by either an onboard or external data logging system, either of which can monitor and log up to four simultaneous hydrostatic testing operations. The data logging systems can be adapted with acoustic technology to transmit data to the surface through the use of a telemetry system.

Artificial lift pumping system

Fiberglass sucker rod manufacturer Fibercom has introduced an artificial lift system designed specifically for low-volume rod pumping. Known as ECO2, the pumping unit uses either 37½-in. joined fiberglass sucker rods or the new continuous sucker rod. Developed for efficiency and simplicity, the unit has relatively long stroke lengths and other design considerations that provide a geometric motion compatible with glass rods and slow-speed pumping. Primary use for the system is expected to be the dewatering of gas wells and stripper well pumping.

Seismic software reduces processing time

Acceleware Corp., a developer of high-performance computing applications, has launched a new seismic data acceleration solution that provides a multi-fold performance increase to reduce processing times and deliver faster results to make drilling decisions. The Acceleware software harnesses the massive parallel processing capabilities of GPU accelerators to greatly increase the efficiency of data centers. This technique is designed for 2D and 3D land and marine data where a typical processing job can compute from several days to months. Migration is the most common seismic data processing method used to recover subsurface images of the earth’s interior, using surface-recorded data volumes obtained from seismic reflection surveys. The Acceleware software directly speeds up the Kirchhoff Pre-Stack Time Migration method, an expensive component of seismic data processing. By accelerating the computation within this method, the software allows increased resolution and faster turnaround while handling larger datasets of increasing complexity.

Five-cylinder mud pump

Ellis Williams Engineering Co. has introduced the Quintuplex 2200, the newest in its line of mud pumps. The 12-in.-stroke pump features five cylinders instead of the typical three, which reduces piston rod load by more than 40% and helps to lengthen the life of load components. Its reduced pressure variation of more than 70% (undampened) reduces mud noise on the drill string, which allows for more efficient Measurement While Drilling (MWD) and Logging While Drilling (LWD). It is the only mud pump in the industry that has a balanced eccentric crankshaft supported by four main (continuous anti-friction) roller bearings. Also, its double failsafe internal lube systems reduce wear on system components.

Coiled tubing sensor technology

Impact Guidance Systems Inc. (IGS), has released DataCoil for coiled tubing applications. The system is an advanced memory sensor that combines multiple sensors into a compact module. The module accompanies the bottomhole assembly and monitors parameters such as pressure, temperature, inclination, compression, and tensile and impact loads. The DataCoil system can be deployed in the field for extended periods of time on a single battery charge, typically over six months. It can be applied to various BHA configurations, including perforating, fracturing, MLT target entry, inflatable packer setting, bridge or plug setting and retrieval, fishing operations, milling operations, vibratory hammers, tractor deployment, and sliding-sleeve manipulation/confirmation. The system supplies information and data that includes coiled tubing loads, surface tensile versus BHA loading, surface applied pressure versus actual BHA pressures, BHA inclination for friction analysis, and actual forces applied during impacting, along with the ability to monitor change with pressure analysis. It can be used with virtually any coiled tubing BHA.

High-power welder generators

Miller Electric Mfg. Co. has increased the output of its Bobcat and Trailblazer Kohler gas-powered and Kubota diesel-powered welder generators to 11,000 watts of useable peak power, which enables the units to better handle sudden electrical loads. Miller guarantees that the welder/generator will provide the stated peak power for a minimum of 30 seconds at 104°F. The generators are therefore better able to tackle increased power loads commonly encountered during motor starts. All models also have large, 12-gal fuel tanks for long run time, and high-impact protective armor with covers to protect the unit on the jobsite and during transport.

High-accuracy GPS

The C-Nav GPS Division of C & C Technologies, Inc., has announced the release of the C-Nav1010, a new GPS receiver that uses the C-Nav Global Satellite GPS Correction Service. The receiver provides sub-meter performance by tightly integrating Precise Point Positioning (PPP) correction data with single-frequency GPS measurements. PPP previously required a high-end dual-frequency receiver. The standard C-Nav1010 system comprises a high-sensitivity single-frequency (L1) GPS receiver integrated with an L-band demodulator operating on a single antenna. The custom-built demodulator receives GPS corrections, QC and integrity data from a constellation of six Inmarsat communication satellites. These provide 200% coverage from latitudes 72° north to 72° south. A separate L-band antenna is required for areas of extreme latitudes, and the C-Nav1010 is capable of using WAAS, EGNOS and external RTCM correction data. The receiver is purpose-built to maximize precision and stability in noisy and hostile environments such as on offshore vessels and close to large structures.
