CO2 analyzer Thermo Electron Corp. introduced a new carbon dioxide analyzer for the natural gas industry called the AutoCO2. The analyzer measures CO2 concentrations in natural gas to maintain gas quality control at delivery points. To ensure compliance with CO2 limits, The analyzer, used in conjunction with Thermo’s AutoPILOT or AutoMATE gas flow computers, provides well and pipeline control to the producer, gathering station operator or transmission line technician. Multiple analyzers can be installed on several incoming lines to monitor, blend or restrict certain production runs to the gathering station. The new anlayzer detects CO2 in natural gas using non-dispersive infrared technology (NDIR). The basic principal of operation is to detect the amount of energy at a specific wavelength that is absorbed by passing natural gas between the infrared optics and sensor. The energy absorbed is directly proportional to the concentration of the simple target and the path length for the energy. The analyzer is easily installed at the meter run by using a sample probe with regulator. With the flow-through design, only 0.5 liter/min. of natural gas can be vented to the atmosphere or used by another analyzer.
Even rubber thickness stator A new even rubber thickness stator, the Moyno ERT Power Section from R&M Energy Systems, improves the overall performance of power sections used in downhole drilling applications. Applying an even thickness of rubber to the stator contour and supporting each lobe with steel minimizes the rubber’s degree of dimensional change during use due to temperature, chemical attack and loading. This design allows the ERT Power Sections to reliably produce up to 100% more power output compared to conventional stators, and higher ROPs. An additional benefit of the high power density is the ability to use shorter power sections comparable in output to that of longer conventional products. This can improve the motor’s directional response as well as MWD and LWD measurement quality by placing their sensors closer to the bit.
Wireline steering directional sensor MicroTesla has deployed its new Wireline Directional Steering Sensor for trenchless and oilfield related applications. Three sensor temperature ratings are available, ranging from 125°C to 175°C. The MicroTesla Steering Module (MSM) is compatible with existing operating platforms as a drop-in replacement. The product is fully digital with its own MPU, power supply and ADC built into the steering module section. The sensor houses a three-axis accelerator package and a three-axis magnetometer section with associated electronics. Future developments will include two-way communication for real-time diagnostics and download of commands for changing conditions and data transmission. A key feature is the capability to operate at about a third of the power rating of existing products under full operating conditions. It is available with or without running gear and will fit seamlessly into existing packages as a drop-in replacement (1-3/8 in. dia.). MSM also operates with existing surface interface hardware and software systems.
Bottomhole assembly can replace drill collars StrataLoc Technology has developed the HeviPac weight transfer system for drilling vertical wells, a system that changes the physics of the drill string. Dense materials used for drilling weight are independent of the drill string itself. The internal weight used for drilling is transferred from the upper sections of the system through the box/pin connections of several 30-ft assemblies to a point directly above the drill bit. This process uses tungsten and other heavy materials to create a pendulum assembly many times more effective than that of standard drill collars. With the internal weight in compression and the body of the tools in tension, the neutral point of the BHA is reduced to a point just 22 in. above the drill bit. There are no bending or buckling moments in the BHA, and stabilizers using the same weight-transfer technology are always in tension regardless of the weight being run on the bit. This allows for an extremely vertical well bore with less hole spiraling. Placing all of the drilling weight in a concentrated area directly above the bit also creates a flywheel effect and greatly increases the power generated by the drill string. The force of restitution and centripetal forces are also greatly increased, adding to bit stability and vertical drilling tendencies at the bit. Additionally, the tungsten in the lowermost unit absorbs vibration and chatter at the bit, resulting in longer life and faster rates of penetration. The tool is balanced with tighter tolerances than those required of drill collars.
Geopressure data management A new software system for managing geopressure information has been introduced by Knowledge Systems. The Pressworks system is a relational database to help operators protect, share and store pressure-related data from diverse sets of well and reservoir information and well log data. It enhances the suite of Knowledge Systems software products that includes the Drillworks system, an integrated family of software applications for geopressure and geomechanics analysis. In addition to serving as a corporate store for pressure-related data, the relational database can also connect to industry-standard databases, proprietary data stores and commercial data vendors over the Internet. This geopressure information is applied to specific projects through projects created using Drillworks software. The job-specific information is uploaded back to the Pressworks database to help streamline the project and provide quality control for information accessed by other users. Non-Drillworks users can browse, select pressure data and conduct queries through Pressworks Scout, a browser-type interface.
Compact gas monitor MSA’s upgraded Orion Plus IR Detector, a compact hand-held multigas monitor, has been enhanced for greater versatility. Offering over 20 different sensors, the unit can be customized to fit virtually any need. Sensing technology options include electrochemical, catalytic combustion and highly reliable dual-beam infrared for tough applications. An extended sensor range – from phosphine to sulphur dioxide – increases unit flexibility and value. Advanced design makes it a good personal monitor as well as a pre-entry confined space check device. Features include: IR options for 0 – 10% vol CO2, 0 – 100% LEL or 0 – 100% vol CH4; poison-resistant catalytic sensor; a wide range of e-chem sensors including Cl2 and NH3; interchangeable NiMH or alkaline battery packs; large graphical display; and standard integral pump and datalogging.
