Baker Hughes Inc. named James R. Clark as president and COO. He joined the company in 2001 as president of Baker Petrolite, and since August 2003 has been VP of marketing and technology for the Baker Hughes. Clark was formerly president and CEO of Consolidated Equipment Companies Inc., and before that was president of Sperry-Sun. 

Lawrence W. Funkhouser is the 2004 Sidney Powers Medalist, the highest honor of the 31,000-member American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Funkhouser is retired director and VP of exploration and production for Chevron Corp., and a past president of AAPG. 

Veritas DGC Inc. appointed Thierry Pilenko as chairman of the board and CEO, subject to government approval for him to live and work in the US. Since 2001, Pilenko served as managing director of SchlumbergerSema in Paris. From 1998 to 2001, he was president of Geoquest, another Schlumberger Ltd. company. 

Sondex, a specialist oilfield technology company, named Lane Roberts general manager of its Sondex/CSS Canada operation, based in Calgary. This follows the acquisition by Sondex of Computer Sonics Systems Inc., a designer and manufacturer of wireline logging equipment. Roberts started his career as a wireline logging engineer in Canada, and has since worked in more than 20 countries. 

Mel Causer is the new senior VP of Exploration & Production for Zurich Global Energy. He will be responsible for worldwide E&P activities, with primary focus on the US. Before joining Zurich, Causer spent 10 years at AIG Oil Rig as VP and regional manager. 

MainTech Maintenance, Inc., has promoted Carlos Guerra to VP of operations. Guerra joined MainTech in 1998 as division manager for drilling rig maintenance. He has now assumed responsibility for all Latin American land and marine business. 

Dave Parker was appointed technical liaison manager working within the Offshore Engineering Group of Hyperlast Ltd., a new role with responsibility for promoting company materials in the oil and gas industry. He first joined Hyperlast in 1990. 

BJ Process and Pipeline Services appointed Derek Clark as business development manager, Northern Europe and West Africa. In his new role, Clark oversees all aspects of BJ PPS business development throughout West Africa and Northern Europe, including the Northern North Sea, Scandinavia and Russia. The company also named Andrew Barden as division technical manager, responsible for business development, engineering and training worldwide. 

Fugro-McClelland Marine Geosciences, Inc., named Vladimir Rapoport as the new president of Fugro CIS. Rapoport will lead the company's market development within the former Soviet Union. 

The environmental management firm Dragun Corp. promoted Jeffrey A. Bolin to VP of technical operations. Also, Michael Sklash, PhD, was promoted to technology director. 

Vincent DeVito was appointed principal deputy assistant secretary of energy for policy and international affairs by energy secretary Spencer Abraham. He will serve as a senior advisor at the Department of Energy with responsibility of assisting in development and implementation of an international energy policy. DeVito joined the DOE in 2001. 

The Texas Railroad Commission gave its 2003 Pioneer of the Year award to George Mitchell. He began his career as a consulting geologist in the 1940s, where he concluded that the flaring of natural gas was burning off valuable resources. Mitchell founded Mitchell Energy and Development Corp., which was acquired by Devon Energy in 2001. 

Mark Payton joined Mustang Engineering as director of strategic development & planning. Previously, he was principal of ML Payton Consultants, a strategic and marketing firm serving the engineering and construction business. He provided consulting services to Mustang the past four years. 

Producers Assistance Corp. named Larry A. Froman as business development specialist. He was most recently a US sales representative for Galperti Engineering, and was a district manager for Wilson Supply Co. 

Michael Fleming has joined Geotrace as area manager, Middle East, based in Cairo. He spent 25 years with Western Geophysical developing software for 3-D land survey planning and acquisition management. Also, Gavin Hills-Jones was appointed VP of Reservoir Services for Geotrace's UK subsidiary based in London. Before that, he was marketing director for Geotrace with responsibility for the Eastern Hemisphere. 

DEATH 

Timothy H. Ling, 46, president and chief operating officer of Unocal Corp., died January 28 in El Segundo, Calif. He was a member of the company's management committee and had served as a member of the board of directors since 2000. Previously, he was executive vice president, North American Operations. Ling was born in Philadelphia, Penn., and earned a BS in geology from Cornell University in 1982 and an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business in 1989. He joined Unocal in 1997 as chief financial officer. WO
