Clean out wellbore debris

The BJ Services Well Cleaning System removes thin, low-permeable filter cake consisting of lost circulation materials, emulsions and other unwanted materials that can have adverse effects on recovery of drilling and completion fluids. It removes mineral and organic oils and thread compounds, as well as chemical residue, and leaves a minimum of contaminants such as formation fines and emulsions of drilling-mud particles that cause formation damage. The system comprises a suite of four mechanical wellbore cleanup tools.

The BJ Fluid-actuated Circulating Sub/ Riser Jetting Tool – a multiple activation tool that facilitates increased annular velocities during well cleanup and displacement operations. The jetting/ washing action of the tool ensures sufficient fluid velocity above liner tops or casing size changes to remove drilling-fluid material and debris.

The BJ TruGage Casing Scraper, with its 360° coverage, is used for drilling out bridge plugs and removing casing burrs during drilling.

The BJ Downhole Debris Filter vacuums foreign material from the wellbore during displacement completion, fishing, milling and workover operations. The device features an internal debris filter and retention chamber to trap material circulated from the wellbore.

Finally, the RuffPup is a mechanical device that cleans the inside of casing during displacement. It features interchangeable, self-centralizing full-gauge stabilizers for proper and equal pressure of the brush sleeve on well tubulars.

User-controlled personnel lifter

Fig 1

MaxiRider from Bishop Lifting Products, Inc., is a personnel lifting winch designed to solve the most common problems that result in accidents: too rapid ascent/ descent, and poor communication between rider and winch operator on the derrick floor. The device incorporates a slower-operating lifting hoist, a mounting frame and a wireless remote control that is controlled by the rider. Acceleration and deceleration is smooth, to a maximum 35 fpm. The crown-mounted model installs easily on top of the crown section while the derrick is down. The hoist is controlled by the user and features an upper limit switch, a wire rope end detector, a reeler survey switch to detect damage to the wire rope, and an emergency lever to allow the sling to be lowered in case of power failure. Overspeed detection causes brake to lock. A cable lanyard attached to the remote control prevents dropping. The derrick-mounted model has the same features, but is clamped to A-frame beams 13 ft above the drill floor. The hoist also holds additional cable to facilitate rigging.

Risk management software

Properly identifying contributions to risk is the key to accurate risk analysis. Warrior Technologies, a provider of specialized software solutions for the oil and gas industry, has partnered with industry experts to build a customized and easy-to-use software program to evaluate risk for drilling and production. Version 2.12 of UnRiskIT helps to effectively and accurately identify key parameters that drive risk exposure. This version contains new features to perform risk analysis on oil and gas projects, without the need to learn the complex settings and input of a retro-fitted Excel spreadsheet. UnRiskIT offers a customized interface where the user can intuitively perform a risk analysis by logically entering and modifying projects in a simple graphical user interface. Consistency can be maintained across multiple projects using common industry knowledge.

Elastomer sealed tricone bits

Hughes Christensen's GX Tricone is a new line of elastomer sealed bits that utilize highly efficient components, increasing durability and delivering longer runs at maximum penetration rates. Engineers have incorporated new compact shapes, optimized carbide grades and more reliable G3 bearings to deliver high performance in either rotary or motor applications. Cutting structures use improved carbide grades, resulting in tougher, more wear-resistant compacts. Finite element analysis was used to document how a new engineered tooth shape distributes stresses over a broader area, improving durability. GX Tricone features four different hydraulic configurations to optimize cuttings removal in specific applications: Conventional bottom cleaning; Clean Sweep 2 and 3, with nozzles positioned so the fluid stream cleans the heel and adjacent heel teeth; and XStream, where nozzles are positioned to clean multiple rows of cones and to create high turbulent energy to efficiently clean the hole bottom. Also, the G3 bearing system features optimized stress distribution through tighter design tolerances and non-cylindrical geometry.

Insertable pump system

Moyno Insertable Progressing Cavity (IPC) Pump Systems, by R&M Energy Systems, allows downhole pump installation and retrieval without pulling the production tubing. These systems can effectively handle a wide range of artificial lift conditions, including low- and high-viscosity fluids and the transport of solids. They have been engineered for performance in oilfield and coalbed methane dewatering applications. Hold-down devices provide tubing-pump annulus sealing at the pump intake and accurate installation at the seating assembly. The system allows flushing operations without disengaging the pump from the seated position, and the landing nipple is the only component attached to the tubing string at the bottom of the hole. IPC Pumps can be installed in 2-7/8 - to 5-1/2 -in.-diameter tubing, with no special tools required for installation.

Window mill for hard formations

PathMAKER Formation Mill, a new window mill from Baker Oil Tools, is designed to mill a full-gauge window and extended rathole, even in hard and abrasive formations. Developed in conjunction with Hughes Christensen, and using technology from the Genesis bit series, the mill features high-impact polycrystalline diamond compact cutters designed to cut metal and hard/ abrasive formations like sandstone, anhydrite, limestone and dolomite in one trip. The specially engineered spiral set cutter alignment of the PathMAKER reduces vibration and provides smoother, cleaner cuts. The mill's profile and cutter placement control drilling fluid to efficiently cool and clean cutter elements.

Drilling rig buyers and sellers guide

Rigs & Drillers is a directory from Rigdata that lists data for all rigs – including land, offshore and barge – currently marketed in the US. The land rigs are tabulated by work area and rated depth. Offshore rigs are broken out by type, rated drilling depth and maximum water depth. Each rig listing is organized by driller, and provides needed specifications, such as drawworks model and horsepower. Offshore rigs are further subdivided by type and water depth capability. A short work history is provided for each rig, showing well count and footage drilled by area. In addition, a drillers' directory lists corporate and district offices, along with key operating and sales personnel.

Geopressure/geomechanics analysis

Knowledge Systems' Drillworks 2004 Release 2 software is an integrated geopressure and geomechanics solution to help E&P companies improve drilling success with new levels of risk reduction, cost savings and drilling performance. Seismic, drilling and geologic data can be transformed into knowledge that operators can use to avoid trouble and reduce nonproductive time. Drillworks Release 2 offers enhancements to the Drillworks software and new technology, including the Drillworks Pressbase database and Drillworks Uncertainty Analysis. The software lets operators pull together, store and analyze large amounts of well- and basin-level data required to avoid geopressure and wellbore stability problems. Drillworks Pressbase is a relational database that allows operators to store and manage their geopressure-related data, including geophysical, petrophysical and drilling data. Geoscientists can store and share data to improve well planning and drilling operations. Drillworks Uncertainty Analysis allows operators to perform analysis on geopressure predictions, understand the uncertainty in calculations and aid decision making.

Borehole seismic processing

VSFusion launched the VS3 system for practical 3D VSP processing. The system incorporates several components to provide superior imaging capability and rapid 3D survey turnaround time. It brings together 3D survey design through its VECON 2D/3D presurvey modelling software; data pre-processing through CGG's GeoCluster processing system; optimization of the velocity model for improved imaging through 2D and 3D velocity tomography; enhanced imaging through improved migration technology; and full 3D visualization and integration through its VISUS 3D Visualization package. The combination into one integrated package enables rapid and efficient data turnaround.

Remote-controlled torquing system

Fig 1BJ Tubular Services introduced the Conductor Torquing System, which offers improved safety and operational efficiency when making up or breaking out conductor-threaded connections. With a spinner system that delivers 7,000 ft/lb, the CTS is also the first of its kind to deliver torques of 150,000 ft/lb . To increase efficiency and safety, the system is designed to operate remotely at extremely high torque levels. Because only one technician is required to operate the unit from a control unit at a distance, personnel aren't required to work in close proximity to the rotary table, so fewer personnel are required. To ensure that the pipe and its protective coating aren't damaged, the CTS and spinner are non-marking systems designed to handle pipe with special care. The makeup system is consolidated into one unit, so there is no need to assemble the unit before makeup or breakout operation.
