 Pre-installed oil spill recovery system

JLMD Ecologic Group developed a system that reduces 70% to 90% of pollution caused by shipwrecked oil tankers. The JLMD System can be installed on any kind of tanker, single or double hulled; works in all weather and is not dependent on the position of the ship on the sea bed. It enables immediate access to tanks and fast recovery of contents. Comprising boxes about 50 cm high installed on deck at each corner of the oil tanks, the system provides access to two 20-cm rigid tubes, the first for allowing water in, the second for removing oil. When a shipwreck occurs, ROVs connect the sunken vessel to a surface ship, and orifices on the vessel’s tanks are opened at the bottom, allowing water to enter by hydrostatic pressure, which forces oil to the surface through a recovery hose. (JLMD Ecologic Group)

 Corrosion barrier ring

DL-RING from Rice Engineering is a corrosion barrier ring that enables placement of a glass-reinforced epoxy internal lining system inside any shoulder-to-shoulder premium threaded tubing or casing without the need for special coupling. The system works with DUOLINE, an internal corrosion-resistant lining for oilfield steel tubing and line pipe. In lab tests, combined stress loading on internally lined 5.5-in. 17-ppf pup joints, pressures of 7,500 psi were sustained with no damage to the lining system or barrier ring components.  Stuffing boxes

Fig 2Hercules Big Stuff DPSB stuffing boxes provide reliable sealing under a variety of operating conditions. Built exceptionally rugged, the boxes have an easy-to-adjust threaded cap with no bolts to tighten. The primary packing can be changed under pressure by tightening compression bolts. The standard Big Stuff is rated at 1,500 psi working pressure and features two 1/4-in. NPT ports (180° apart) for grease zerk and pressure gauge, and has a lower profile than other models. It is available with inverted cone packing and offers protection of packing from the weight of the rod string. (R&M Energy Systems)

 Low-maintenance chain

Diamond Chain Co. introduces Dust Stopper Chain, a pre-lubricated roller chain that seals out dust and debris. This specialty chain combines the features of two Diamond Chain products – Ring Leader O-Ring and Duralube self-lubricating chains. Dust Stopper is useful in dusty and dirty applications or environments where regular lubrication is not possible or practical. The chain employs a one-piece powdered metal bushing/roller impregnated with oil and is designed for applications where re-lubrication is difficult, expensive or impossible. Because the lubricant is sealed into the joints of the chain, the need for additional lubrication and maintenance is decreased, and life-cycle costs are lowered. It is available in sizes 40, 50, 60 and 80 XDLO, and specifications include speeds from 650 to 1,300 ft/min. (Diamond Chain Company)

 Inflatable packer

Baker Oil Tools’ Flo-Pak inflatable packer is a multiple-set packer system designed for production logging analysis in horizontal or deviated wellbores. The packer can be set and reset on coiled or threaded tubing while maintaining a production or injection path through the tool with minimal pressure loss. Multiple zones can be tested in a single trip. The packer is inflated at discrete locations throughout the wellbore to divert all flow through a production logging tool below. The system’s fixed ID carrier allows for high-resolution logging over a wide range of flowrates. (Baker Oil Tools)

 High-bandwidth visual workstation

Fig 3SGI has introduced the Tezro workstation, which delivers leading-edge visualization, multiprocessing and digital media. With a desktop architecture based on SGI supercomputers, the workstation has high memory bandwidth and I/O connectivity. Key features include: up to four processors for CPU-intensive applications; VPro graphics for highest quality and visualization flexibility available on a desktop; two form factors – the tower for in-office computing and a rackmount system for flexible configurability and OEM deployment; and price/performance improvement over SGI’s Octane2. Bandwidth and multiprocessing provide muscle for seismic interpretation and reservoir simulation. (SGI)

 Powered telescopic mast jib crane

A new jib crane developed by Air Technical Industries has a hydraulically operated mast that serves dual purposes. The beam can rotate under an obstruction or reach into a cavity to pick up a load, and it can rotate and rise higher than obstructions. It can be operated without a hoist or electric wiring. Because it can operate with a sling and trolley on the beam, it is suited for hazardous, hot or corrosive environments. The 360° manual rotation gives versatility in on-spot handling. Hydraulic system can be powered by 110-volt AC or 220/440-volt three-phase, or can be air-powered for hazardous areas. The crane is available in 500-, 1,000- or 2,000-lb capacities, with a beam reach of 6 – 12 ft and lifting height up to 20 ft. (Air Technical Industries)

 Multipoint injection system

Fig 4 The CHEMJEX injector system can be configured to meet a wide range of on- and offshore injection applications in the oil and gas industry, including amine, phosphates, methanol, O2 and H2S scavengers, accelerants and different kinds of inhibitors, among other uses. Featuring two electrically actuated Milton Roy mRoy XTs, one operating and one standby, the system can inject 6 gallons per day at 1,000 psi. It is infinitely adjustable with 100:1 turndown and has hydraulically actuated diaphragms for enhanced chemical compatibility. Its corrosion-resistant three-coat paint system is specially suited to offshore applications. (YZ Systems)

 Window exit for tubular systems

Enventure Global Technology has added window exit capabilities to their Solid Expandable Tubular (SET) technology applications. By using the conventional openhole liner system, the company is now able to install and expand through a milled window off the face of a properly configured whipstock. This capability increases the versatility of the openhole system and the range of uses for sidetracks and existing casing applications. The ability to expand through a window provides flexibility to accommodate horizontal, vertical and high-angle holes. (Enventure Global Technology)

 Positioning and heading vector system

Measurement Devices introduces a GPS position and heading vector measurement system named G-Vec. The system provides a non-line-of-sight dynamic position sensing capability that is all-weather, highly accurate and operates medium to long range. Pairs of G-Vec systems can be interlinked using UHF radio for vessel-to-vessel maneuvering and collision avoidance. It is primarily used to control or assist automatic dynamic positioning of a vessel adjacent to offshore structures or other vessels, providing absolute and relative positions. (Measurement Devices Ltd.)

 Fire-retardant cable conduit

A new cable-conduit seal for ships and offshore rigs prevents fire and smoke breakthrough in case of emergency. The conduit seals have been adapted to the construction requirements of marine engineering where openings for electrical installations are often difficult to close again. In this configuration, the sleeves in which cables and wires are embedded in layers between Bayfomox molded parts form an effective seal. When exposed to high temperatures, the parts form a heat-insulating carbon foam that prevents breakthrough of fire and smoke gases for an extended time. Bayfomox can be used to produce both rigid and flexible molded parts that do not contain any fibers, solvents, plasticizers or halogen compounds. The construction elements can be installed easily and completely dust-free without the need for special tools. Repeated opening and closing of the cable conduits to insert new cables can be carried out easily. (Bayer Chemicals and IBMO International)
