Advanced Schedule of Articles

Coming In August 2002. . .

Our well-respected International Outlook Issue, now in its 57th year, is an industry standard. Twice a year, World Oil sends out more than 1,500 surveys to state and federal agencies, oil companies and other organizations on an international scale. The data that result are unique, independent, and often cited by agencies such as EIA, the World Almanac, DeGolyer & McNaughton, and others. It includes oil production data, gas and oil reserves, wells drilled, drilling footage, types of wells drilled, and other data gathered from countries and oil companies throughout the world.

This year, the eight world regions (North America, South America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe/FSU, Africa, Middle East, Far East and South Pacific) will be overviewed in a concise, roughly three-page/region format. Due to our relationship with Petroleum Economist and Euromoney Institutional Investor plc, we now have access to improved cartographic resources. This will result in greatly improved regional maps that are available for sponsorship. We will also include our usual discovery tables and licensing information, where applicable.

Technology at Work

This year, we begin an enhanced technology section that includes the following five technical articles:

New drill-in fluid design BP, BHP Billiton and TETRA Technologies overviews the use of a new drill-in fluid in offshore development well Marlin A-4 in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. Production results were outstanding, as the well is one of BP's most successful in the Gulf of Mexico.

Drillpipe logging In this article, Reeves presents a unique way to convey and deploy logging tools on drill pipe. This is particularly applicable in highly deviated, horizontal wells, especially under bad hole conditions. Data is acquired in memory mode and depth is controlled in a manner similar to LWD (Logging While Drilling).

Capillary tube intervention Capillary tube intervention. This case study from Advanced Coiled Tubing shows how capillary tubing – which is often embedded in scale – can be removed from a well without having to pull the production tubing. The result is a considerable saving in downtime and money. Such situations are becoming more common, as more operators are using capillary tubing in their wells to enhance production.

Supersonic production separatorTwister BV (Shell, Beacon Group and 3I Group PLC) illustrates the operating concepts, range of applicability, and case studies of its revolutionary supersonic production separator. The article shows how the device greatly reduces topside space requirements, enhances separation efficiency and saves money in various ways.

Seafloor venting – choosing prospectsIt has long been recognized that hydrocarbon seeps are a good harbinger for exploration success. However, the seeps, themselves, only indicate an active petroleum system – not where to drill. But if one considers all of the data, as CMS Oil and Gas did offshore Equatorial Guinea, sometimes a gas chimney resulting in a seafloor crater, is exactly where to drill a successful exploration well. This case study from CMS involves the integration of various data, including: piston-core data from TDI-Brooks and Geomark; seismic from PGS; reprocessing from JDK; bathymetry; and pinger.

World Gas and Oil Outlook

From the well-respected industry analysts and forecasters, Groppe, Long & Littell, a report on the outlook for world gas and oil markets and factors affecting prices.
