August 2000 Supplement
This is the 4th annual issue of World Oil and Pipe Line & Gas Industry’s supplemental report on technology evolving to meet growing interest in the new, deepwater frontier. Since last year, activity has accelerated off the West Coast of Africa, as described in two features on offshore Angola. With 50% of its total reserves in waters beyond 1,000 m, Petrobras continues its research to move, economically, into waters 2,000 to 3,000 m deep. The service sector is taking the lead in many technical developments, as described in several accompanying articles. And progress continues on two key technology needs – well intervention and flow assurance.

About the Cover
R&B Falcon’s Deepwater Millennium was completed by Samsung of Korea on May 1, 1999. It was moved to the Gulf of Mexico where it began a four-year commitment with Statoil, setting a new Gulf of Mexico deepwater record at over 8,000 ft of water. The drillship arrived at its latest location offshore Nigeria on June 2. Photo by Mieko Mahi, courtesy R&B Falcon Drilling.
