Portugal. Mohave Oil and Gas of Houston is drilling in the Lusitanian basin onshore, north of Lisbon. Taurus Petroleum of Sweden is searching in the Galacian area offshore, near the Spanish border.

Earlier, Mohave reported the country’s first significant gas discovery in its Alijubarrota Block, and this year is drilling the Alijubarrota 3, with a target depth of 7,875 ft. An earlier appraisal well produced 256 Mcfgd, but the flow was unsustainable because of formation damage. The discovery could hold up to two Tcf of gas.

Spain. Just after the Spanish oil company Repsol acquired Argentina’s YPF, the company announced an oil discovery offshore in the Mediterranean Sea near its existing Casablanca field. The Chipiron 1 was drilled to 11,779 ft and tested at 7,000 bpd of 40ºAPI oil. Plans call for a subsea wellhead and a 6-mi pipeline to the Casablanca platform. WO
