University of Michigan team wins BP Ultimate Field Trip 2014 U.S. competition

HOUSTON -- BP has announced that Team RECon of the University of Michigan has won the firm’s Ultimate Field Trip (UFT) 2014 U.S. competition, designed to identify top students in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The program provides undergraduates the opportunity to gain experience working on real-world challenges in the energy sector.

Team RECon, made up of Leo Devota, Spencer Paris and David Marsh, was selected following a two-day competition at BP’s U.S. headquarters in Houston, where they competed against teams from seven leading universities. For the 2014 competition, teams were asked to identify an innovative solution for reducing energy consumption that could be implemented at scale across the industry by 2025.

Team RECon proposed a system for capturing, purifying and using associated petroleum gases that are currently lost through flaring at some well sites.

As part of the grand prize, Team RECon earned a two-week field trip in June 2014 that will explore BP operations in Illinois and Alaska, alongside the winning teams from the UK, Angola, Canada, and Trinidad and Tobago. The winning team will also receive $500 worth of gift cards, while runners-up will earn $250 in gift cards.

Participating U.S. schools in the 2014 National Finals included Georgia Institute of Technology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Texas A&M University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Houston, the University of Illinois – Urbana/Champaign, the University of Michigan and the University of Texas at Austin.
