NEWS FROM ONS NORWAY: Safetec introduces reality-based safety training

STAVANGER – As we observe the 25th anniversary of the Piper Alpha disaster and the Macondo crisis in the Gulf of Mexico is still fresh on our minds, the industry is determined to improve its safety training to help prevent future such incidents.

Safetec, an ABS Group company, presented  its reality-based training capabilities at an ONS Norway press conference.

“A safety crisis presents a complex risk reality,” explained Jens Christen Rolfsen, safety specialist at Safetec. “If we consider our perspectives on safety, the factors we have focused on since the 1950s have been technological, human and organizational.”

Safetec’s safety training programs involve the use of simulation to present reality-based crisis situations to the trainee. A psychologist is on hand to evaluate the trainee’s ability to handle the crisis and provide appropriate guidance to improve response.

“Our training programs are integrated into the organization and are tailored to fit specific needs,” said Rolfsen.

Safetec has reality-based training facilities in Norway and plans are underway to set up a similar facility at the new ABS office complex being built in west Houston.
