NEWS FROM ONS NORWAY: Intergraph previews Smart 3D 2014 software solution for offshore structures

STAVANGER – Intergraph presented a preview of the upcoming Intergraph Smart 3D 2014, which offers enhancements and capabilities to enhance user productivity, through a press conference and a live demonstration.

Executive Vice President EMIA Philippe Marceau explained how the SmartPlant 3D, SmartMarine 3D and SmartPlant 3D Materials Handling edition, have been consolidated into a single solution that will help oil and gas companies model complex offshore structures and vessels and create automated engineering deliverables.

Marceau said the the rule-based concept of Smart 3D enables more efficient design, with better quality and design integrity. In addition, upgraded Model Data Reuse (MDR) capabilities enables enables efficient reuse of design that is not possible in any other 3D CAD application. Users can reuse FEED or old designs with different catalogs and specifications, by leveraging Smart 3D’s unique rule re-use, tag renaming and specification interchange. Also, enhanced 3D interoperability capabilities enable the use of 3D data from multiple foreign CAD systems in conjunction with native Smart 3D models. Smart 3D is the only system in the world that allows interoperability with both graphics and data of foreign CAD models, making it an ideal solution for revamp and joint venture projects.

“The North Sea has traditionally played a major role in E&P, but is now facing increasing challenges,” said Marceau. “The design of new facilities becomes more challenging as the drilling goes into deeper waters and closer to the Arctic. In addition, the North Sea is a mature market, therefore the amount of engineering data that needs to be managed demands a more centralized and efficient data processing system. Projects are getting larger and need to deal with larger amounts of data, shorter schedules and an increased number of overseas stakeholders. The solution to these challenges is to rely on advanced technology opportunities.”

Intergraph’s vision is to support the full life cycle of the platform or ship focused on integration, knowledge management, integration and reuse when transitioning from one phase to the other without re-entering the same data. “Intergraph’s vision to address the whole project lifecycle is built on a technology shift we have identified in the market. The majority of offshore projects today are using the same technology as was used 30 years ago. Intergraph is now providing the solution the offshore market will use in the next 30 years,” said Marceau.

According to Intergraph, Smart 3D is the next-generation 3D design solution specifically tailored for plant, offshore, shipbuilding and the metals and mining industries, employing a breakthrough engineering approach that leverages real-time concurrent design, rules, relationships and automation. It is the most advanced and productive 3D design solution that effectively enables optimized design, increasing safety, quality and productivity, while shortening project schedules. Companies in these industries typically report a 30% improvement in overall engineering design productivity.
