Alcoa Oil & Gas signs supply agreement with ALTISS Technologies for aluminum drill pipe

HOUSTON -- Alcoa Oil & Gas, an Alcoa business, announced today it has executed a seven-year supply agreement with ALTISS Technologies for Alcoa’s innovative AADP aluminum drill pipe. ALTISS will provide rental, inspection and maintenance services for AADP drill pipe in North America. ALTISS is a Houston-based company that provides products and services for the oil and gas industry. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Many oil and gas companies prefer to rent, instead of own, drill pipe. This agreement significantly expands the availability of aluminum drill pipe within the growing North American market. Alcoa’s high strength-to-weight aluminum alloy drill pipe has been successfully used in high-complexity extended-reach (ERD) wells, most recently offshore Brunei in Southeast Asia.

AADP drill pipe reduces overall drilling costs, and increases a rig’s capacity to drill farther than traditional steel drill pipe. Alcoa’s pipe design and unique aluminum construction make it up to 50% lighter than steel pipe, with greater strength-to-weight ratios than most steel drill pipe. In addition, a proprietary thermal connection technology allows steel tool joints to be attached to the aluminum pipe body. The aluminum alloy tube is produced at Alcoa’s Lafayette, Ind., operations.
