Tenaris reports positive results on field run of new coating with Petrobras

RIO DE JANIERO -- Tenaris has successfully completed the first installation of its latest multifunctional coating on 1,000-m string used in one of Petrobras’ offshore pre-salt fields, the company said. The dry coating is applied to pipes post-threading, and is intended to protect against the deepwater conditions found offshore Brazil.

Tenaris introduced the coating, called Dopeless, to Petrobras as a way to meet the challenging production and HSE demands of such complex and environmentally-sensitive wells. The coating was applied to the TenarisHydril connections before deployment to the exploratory deepwater well.

A 1,000-m string with 22 joints of 18-in. P110 TenarisHydril Wedge 511, and 69 identical joints using Dopeless technology, allowed Petrobras to compare and analyze the dry coating in an operation at a water depth of more than 3,000 feet. A comparison of these during the operation showed that the connections with dope were run at an average of 6 joints/hr, while those using Dopeless technology were run at an average of 8 joints/hr.

The coating was designed to minimize the release of common products from operations with dope and the manpower needed for make-up. The pipe was prepared for offshore use at Tenaris’s service base in Rio das Ostras, including pipe measurements and drifting. As is standard for Brazilian offshore operations, Tenaris field services personnel were present during this first exercise using Dopeless.
