WARSAW--Agencies controlled by Poland's Ministry of Science and Higher Education Ministry and Poland's Treasury Ministry have agreed to co-finance research on technologies needed by private sector investors exploring for shale gas in the central European country, government officials said Wednesday.

Polish Treasury Minister Mikolaj Budzanowski, who has called shale gas "a great national project", said this program of government support for shale gas-related studies aims to give Poland "technological independence", with an eye towards eventually selling technologies abroad.

Mr. Budzanowski said state-controlled natural gas utility PGNiG SA and fuel refiner PKN Orlen both expressed interested in taking part in joint-projects with the Polish scientific community. Both companies have licenses to explore for shale gas.

The National Centre of Research and Development and Agencja Rozwoju Przemyslu have each budgeted 250 million zlotys ($75.5 million) to fund the research program, the two government entities said in a statement. A matching PLN500 will be provided by private sector investors.
