Deepwater Horizon trial rescheduled due to Super Bowl, Mardi Gras

BY ALISON SIDER

NEW ORLEANS -- A federal judge has postponed the Deepwater Horizon trial until February, citing the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras as potential scheduling conflicts, a spokesman for BP said.

The trial had been slated to begin January 14, but instead Judge Carl Barbier ordered that it begin February 25, after the February 3 football game and the Mardi Gras festivities have ended.

The bench trial is to concern liability for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon rig explosion.

Judge Barbier will consider a proposed settlement agreement between BP and thousands of plaintiffs at a fairness hearing scheduled for November 8.
