Authors' Guidelines:
Preparing and submitting articles
Basic Requirements
The article should be typed double-spaced on one side only on white
paper approximately 8-1/2 x 11 inches. The suggested title or head
and author's bylines should appear on the first page.
WORLD OIL avoids individual footnotes, preferring to group numbered
references at the end of the article. All such references should
use superscripts, like this.24
Because it frequently is mechanically impossible to place tables
or drawings immediately adjacent to the text referring to them,
never use the expression "see following Figure" or see Table below."
Instead, use the expression "see Fig. 1" or "see Table 1". All drawings
and tables should be attached as addenda to the back of the manuscript,
rather than interspersing them through the manuscript. Proper placement
will be handled by WORLD OIL in the final layout.
Both text and art may be submitted electronically, either via e-mail
or saved on 3-1/2 in. diskettes or Zip disks. Text should be in
an ASCII text format or in a standard word processing program. Tables
may be saved as DIF, text with tabs, SLK, Lotus 1-2-3 or Excel files.
Art should be submitted separately from text and should not be
imbedded in the word processing document. WORLD OIL prefers art
files created and saved in Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.
We can also handle Aldus Freehand files. Illustrations that were
not produced using these programs should be submitted as EPS files
whenever possible. TIFF and PICT files are also workable, but are
the least desirable. Photographs should be submitted in sizes larger
than they would appear in print and at resolutions of at least 300
dpi.
Articles may be submitted via e-mail to editorial@worldoil.com.
Articles should be transmitted as attachments to your e-mail message,
which should include notification of the application used to create
the article and the type of compression or encoding program used
for transmission. Since art is more complicated, please consult
with your editor or the Magazine Production Director for further
instructions.
Good Illustrations Help
Photographs, drawings and charts are invaluable. They are great
reader interest-getters, and frequently clarify descriptive matter
in the text.
If artwork is not submitted electronically, it should be of high
enough quality to allow scanning for further rendering. Photographs
should be clear, glossy prints. Charts and drawings should be prepared
with sharp lines and proper color definition. Originals rather than
fuzzy copies are preferred. Lettering on charts and drawings must
be legible, and by all means large enough to stand considerable
reduction. Charts should use only essential grids.
Number all photographs, charts and drawings. Write all captions
on a separate sheet, using numbers corresponding to those appearing
on pictures or drawings.
Right to Edit Copy
WORLD OIL must reserve the right to edit copy. Authors will always
be advised of major changes. We will not be offended when an author
does not wish to accede to our revisions. On the other hand, we
hope no author will be offended should WORLD OIL not be able to
publish the article without the revisions suggested by us.
