New drilling connection handles challenging horizontal, extended reach wells

Vallourec has released VAM X-Force, a high performance drilling connection that is designed to drill in the most challenging environments. According to the company, it provides the highest torque and longest fatigue life, with the lowest total cost of ownership of any rotary shouldered connection. Through the combination of a traditional double-shoulder design and a thread profile, it excels in mechanical, operational and economic performance. The curvy thread design increases the surface available for torque generation, while reducing the amount of stress placed on the cross-section. As a result, the drilling connection features an enhanced fatigue life, as well as deep stabbing—eliminating the need for stabbing guides. The new design affords the high torsional strength and improved hydraulics necessary to drill challenging horizontal and extended reach wells. Image: Vallourec.

Memory tools break through mechanical barriers

Quartzdyne, Inc., has introduced its Quartz memory tool and Piezo memory tool. The tools can break through mechanical barriers by exercising a combination of durability and accuracy. In addition to monitoring HPHT surveys, the memory tools also detect interference and build up workflows. They are available for a number of oilfield applications, including drillstem tests, slickline operations, interference tests, long-duration tests, and overall production optimization. The memory tool features a welded circuit enclosure, metal-to-metal seals, a side port connector for easy access, a diaphragm-protected quartz transducer, 5.5 million data sets, and 100% hybrid MCM electronics. This makes the tool easy to use, and allows just one supplier for service and support. Image: Quartzdyne.

New production optimization platform released

Weatherford International announced the release of the ForeSite production optimization platform at the Weatherford Enterprise Software Conference. The new platform combines physics-based models with advanced data analytics to improve performance across wells, reservoirs and surface facilities. This release is the first in a series of integrated software offerings that will combine the company’s production optimization technologies with the internet-of-things, cloud computing and advanced analytics to enable complete asset management. The platform is initially focused on improving the management of wells with rod-lift systems. It will later extend to all forms of lift, as well as management and optimization at the reservoir and surface-facility levels.

Uninterruptible power supply system enhancement for offshore oil rigs released

Ametek Solidstate Controls, Inc., a manufacturer of customized uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, has released its new SlimLine product line enhancement, designed to meet the highly specialized need for smaller UPS units on offshore oil and gas rigs. The enhanced cabinet design has a smaller footprint, and it can be applied across many other product lines as well. The enhancement allows for more efficient operations within the oil and gas market, while maximizing the limited square footage on drilling platforms, where space is at a premium.  SlimLine products provide the same continuous, clean, regulated power as the existing larger Ametek units, according to the company.

Couplings reduce stress during offshore hose reel applications

The Marine2 launched by KLAW is 32% shorter and 25% lighter than traditional marine breakaway couplings and is designed to reduce stress on hoses used on offshore hose reel applications. The shorter design can reduce coil disruption on the reel, unlike alternative designs that are longer, and therefore increase hose stress and fatigue. The new coupling design provides a safe parting point within the hose transfer system in ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore and vessel-to-offshore platform transfers. The coupling is designed to activate in an emergency, such as vessel drift in stormy conditions or pressure surge. When activated, the valves within the coupling shut both upstream and downstream flows within the hose transfer system, and allow immediate separation of the line. Therefore, it minimizes the chance of spill and reduces the risk of damage to assets, injury to personnel, extended downtime, and contamination of the environment. The coupling comes in 2-in., 3-in., 4-in., 5-in. and 6-in. standard nominal bore sizes, and is compatible with soft-walled, hard-walled, and composite hoses. Image: KLAW.

RAR technology adds features to new releasable mooring system

Delmar Systems has launched the new RAR Plus  and the MOOR-Max Releasable Mooring System. The RAR Plus builds on a 35-year history of previous Rig Anchor Release (RAR) technology by adding key features, such as a manual backup release method, and increasing the ultimate and release load ratings to the acoustic release technology. In addition, it transmits both direct and indirect line tension measurements from internal sensors, for real-time display onboard the rig in a graphical user interface. The new RAR technology is a key component in the Delmar MOOR-Max Releasable Mooring System. The MOOR-Max system provides a new mooring system for MODUs to avoid storms or improve rig move efficiency. It combines acoustic mooring release technology with efficient proprietary methods from more than 40 years of rig moving experience. Image: Delmar Systems.
