Modeling software determines complex reservoir properties

CGG GeoSoftware has launched EarthModel FT 9.5, the latest version of its geological modeling software that combines well and seismic data for a better understanding of the reservoir. Users can determine reservoir properties—such as lithofacies, porosity and permeability—for more accurate modeling results. The software combines surface mapping, integrated structural modeling, reservoir property modeling and upscaling in one package, with direct output to most flow simulators. Changes can be incorporated collaboratively into the central database in real time, which allows the sharing of information. Additional enhancements for creating 3D geological grids include an enhanced algorithm for improved vertical layering.

Threaded connector ensures reliability

Frank’s International has released the new Xtreme3 Premium Connectors. The deepwater, threaded connector features a metal seal, deep-stab and negative load flank, ensuring increased performance and reliability. Developed specifically for rigorous applications, the angled thread cone allows for optimized stress distribution across the thread pattern. Additionally, its tapered shoulder keeps seals engaged while in tension by suppressing radial deflection, and increased shoulder torque aids in resisting back-out due to vibration.

Microgrid technology increases lift equipment uptime

FlexGen has launched FlexGen Production Power Microgrid, the newest version of its scalable, digitally-enabled microgrid technology. It is configured specially for artificial lift applications, including electric submersible pumps, gas lift and rod pumps. The technology delivers high-quality electrical power to artificial lift operations, both on and off utility-supplied grid power. It significantly increases lift equipment uptime and production, thereby reducing artificial lift electricity costs by 40% to 60%, for both generator set and grid-supplied sites. FlexGen can ingest high volumes of electrical system “fast data,” and rapidly develop automated control and hardware solutions to optimize power system performance at a low cost.

Motor control center enhances operator safety

Eaton has introduced an arc-resistant version of its FlashGard motor control center (MCC) technology, designed to both prevent an arc flash event and protect personnel if an arc flash occurs. It is the first design to combine arc-preventative and arc-resistant technology within a single motor control center. The solution emphasizes prevention, insulation and isolation to support safety during routine maintenance operations. Unlike conventional MCCs, the FlashGard design enables units to be disconnected and reconnected to the vertical bus with the unit door closed, maintaining a dead-front barrier during maintenance operations and enhancing operator safety.

Rotating control device proven for gas-tight sealing

Weatherford has conducted the industry’s first nitrogen gas testing on its SafeShield Model 7100 RCD (rotating control device). The device, which is used with annular and ram BOPs to contain annular fluids during drilling operations, reportedly is the first RCD on the market that is proven for gas-tight sealing. The barrier enhances safe fluid containment and diversion to protect against drilling hazards. The company evaluated different sealing element sizes for three types of tests, including static, stripping and rotating tests of the bearing assembly. Results surpassed API 16RCD criteria for all tests, and no visible signs of wear had been observed following the testing.

Digital charting system performs pressure tests with ease

Braeden Engineering and Consulting has introduced its new Digital Charting System 1200 (DCS-1200) series. The system records and charts data collected from various types of sensors, and performs tests based on parameters input by the user. While it has a multitude of uses, its primary function is performing pressure tests. The DCS-1200 package includes a 12.1-in. touch panel PC, equipped with Windows 7 Prof OS and a customizable charting software, capable of displaying multiple charts with multiple pens. Additionally, test reports are fully customizable by the user and are presented in PDF format for easy printing and transferring. Data logging and archiving is integrated, as well.

Automatic shutdown system enhances safety during hot work

PetroHab has launched the ATEX-certified Safe-Stop automatic shutdown system. The Safe-Stop Modular Shut Down System (MSDS) works in conjunction with the pressurized Petro-Habitat HWSE, to provide safety, whenever hot work is conducted in the vicinity of potential flammables. An example is ATEX Zone 1-rated hazardous areas on drilling rigs. By continuously monitoring the pressure inside the Petro-Habitat HWSE, the Safe-Stop MSDS enhances its safety by only allowing hot work to be carried out inside the HWSE, if the air pressure within it exceeds the air pressure outside of it, thereby creating a positive pressure environment. This prevents unwanted flammable gases from entering the enclosure, which allows hot work to be undertaken safely without the need to shut down the facility.

Alloy withstands aggressive downhole conditions

Sandvik has released its new slickline-grade Sanicro 56Mo, a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy that is suited for service in the most corrosive environments. Developed as an alternative to more costly competitor grades, the material is able to withstand a wide range of aggressive conditions in downhole settings. It has been designed to maximize production with quicker, safer and more efficient processes. It meets all of the operational demands presented by pressure in water depths below 10,000 ft, and at temperatures above 400°F.
