Software platform provides integrated E&P analysis

Schlumberger has released its 2013 Petrel E&P software platform, delivering integrated analysis from exploration to production. Petrel 2013 brings advances in integration, multiuser collaboration and applied science, including improved petroleum system modeling, structural interpretation and production analytics, as well as additional workflow improvements and productivity enhancements. The Petrel 2013 platform delivers enhanced integration to address key challenges, for example accurate delineation of subsurface features in pre- and sub-salt reservoirs. The release brings improved salt interpretation workflows, augmented seismic imaging through pre-stack wide azimuth analysis, and improved links with Omega seismic data processing software. The introduction of a volume-based modeling approach supports precise representation of geological complexity, to more accurately predict hydrocarbon accumulations. Further, geoscientists can now model 1D petroleum systems to determine charge maturity and risk.

First-ever GPO designed for oil and gas industry

Trilogy Purchasing Alliance has developed the first group purchasing organization (GPO) specifically dedicated to the needs of the oil and natural gas industry. With this, corporations in the energy sector can now aggregate their purchasing power to drive significant cost-savings for all members. Through a GPO, organizations combine their purchasing volumes to negotiate pricing with a select number of suppliers.

Cloud-based infrastructure hosts SCADA platform

ABB has partnered with GlobaLogix to provide a new SCADA Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution, based on ABB’s SCADAvantage product. GlobaLogix has built a highly-secure, redundant, cloud-based infrastructure to host ABB’s SCADA platform. The infrastructure provides access to 53 data centers in North America, with 2,048-bit encryption that exceeds current U.S. Department of Defense standards. The infrastructure complies with the most stringent Tier 4 standards.

Styrene-free, corrosion-resistant coating launched for oil and gas

Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings has launched Magnalux 404 FF, the first styrene-free vinyl ester for use with steel and concrete substrates in oil
and gas. The new coating is specially formulated to combat immersion and containment service corrosion caused by contact with aggressive chemicals, such as aromatic solvents, hi-aromatic gasoline, ethanol gasohol, MTBE, ETBE, TAME and ether/fuel blends. Magnalux 404 FF is a low-VOC (<15g/L), flake-filled, chemically resistant premium tank lining that offers improved chemical and temperature resistance. Flakes, made of a crystalline form of iron oxide, provide improved edge protection and abrasion resistance. Because Magnalux 404 FF
is styrene-free, it will not shrink, and pungent odors are nearly eliminated, says the company.

Schlumberger releases new E&P knowledge management solution

Schlumberger has released Studio Manager, which delivers information management capabilities for the Studio E&P knowledge environment. The program allows information management professionals to proactively track asset team progress, and resolve data issues, working interactively with users of the Petrel E&P software platform. The Studio environment allows E&P experts to find all relevant data, collaborate with peers, and capture and share best practices in the context of their current Petrel workflow. Indexing technology provides access to both structured and unstructured data in Studio repositories, as well as third-party applications and data sources. As part of the standard commercialization process, the Studio Manager capabilities tested included managing data quality and database integrity, while at the same time seeing how asset team members are using and sharing technical information.

Heavy-duty oblique icebreaker introduced

With construction underway on the first-ever oblique icebreaker, Aker Arctic Technology has unveiled a new version of the unique vessel type that will bring ice management and pollution control to a new level in thick, first-year ice. The first ARC 100 is due for delivery to the Russian Ministry of Transport in early 2014, after a collaborative build involving Kaliningrad’s OJSC Yantar and Helsinki’s Arctech yards. The resulting newbuild is a breakthrough in asymmetric three-thruster conceptual design, which will bring new capability to terminal operations, ice management and oil spill response in freezing seas. The 76-m vessel, with her oblique ice-breaking action, improves year-round oil spill response.

New temperature measurement, control tool introduced

The new Brookfield DV3T Touch Screen Rheometer provides an integrated temperature control right from the screen. The DV3T was engineered to allow users to control the temperature of Brookfield TC Series Baths or the Brookfield Thermosel System, without a PC. The major redesign enhances ease of use and includes many new features. The 7-in. touch screen displays all test parameters, along with measured values for yield stress, viscosity and temperature. TC Series Water Baths were also recently given a sleek new design that includes the addition of touch screen technology, one-touch control with adjustable pre-set temperatures, as well as multiple language capability. The Brookfield Thermosel System is a high-temperature system that allows users to precisely control samples up to 300°C.

World’s first subsea wireless CP monitoring system

WFS Technologies and Stork Technical Services have introduced Seatooth Smart CP, the world’s first subsea wireless cathodic protection (CP) monitoring system, designed for retrofit to existing fields. Seatooth Smart CP monitors the effects of corrosion by measuring anode current wirelessly, in real time, using a Seatooth S100 device and a wireless-enabled ROV. For both preventive and diagnostic applications, the system enables wireless monitoring of the condition of the sacrificial anode to verify it is functioning and its rate of depletion. The CP Engineer can extrapolate what weight of anode material is required to optimize levels of protection, based on actual conditions on the structure. Each monitoring node converts the local data to a digital stream. The digital stream is transmitted wirelessly through a networked monitoring system. These data are wirelessly harvested by ROVs (or divers) as frequently as required.

Valve plug cordsets eliminate sealing gaskets

The overmolded face on TURCK’s new valve plug cordsets eliminates the need for an additional sealing gasket, improving performance in harsh environments. Featuring a translucent molding material with embedded, bright LED’s, the cordsets provide visibility for power indication from any angle with black, grey, yellow and clear coloring options to accommodate diverse applications. TURCK’s overmolded design offers a full cordset alternative to traditional field wireable connectors, which require assembling and hand wiring before they can be used. Field wireable configurations increase the chances of mis-wiring, and also incur high labor costs. Overmolded valve plug cordsets conform to the
EN 17 5301-803 standard.
