Shell announced that Ben van Beurden, the current director of its refining and marketing operations, will become its new chief executive next year, replacing retiring CEO Peter Voser. Van Beurden took over the running of Shell’s refining and marketing business in January. Before that, he held senior roles in chemicals and manufacturing, and served as private assistant to the company’s chairman between 2002 and 2004. Van Beurden will become CEO, effective Jan. 1.


Longtime chairman and CEO of Mobil, Rawleigh Warner, died June 26 in Hobe Sound, Fla., at the age of 92. Warner, chairman and CEO of Mobil from 1969 to 1986, and president from 1965 to 1969, was an early leader in the area of advocacy advertising, giving his company a voice in the public affairs space. He was born Feb. 13, 1921, in Chicago, and his father was chairman of Pure Oil. Warner graduated in 1943 from Princeton University, and then served in the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II. Warner spent much of his early career at Socony, the Standard Oil Co. of New York. He managed Socony’s Middle East department, and was named a regional V.P. of Mobil International Oil, a Socony division. He became president of the renamed Socony Mobil Oil Co. in 1965. It became Mobil a year later. After retiring from Mobil, he served on corporate boards, including that of American Express. In addition to his wife, Warner’s survivors include two daughters, two sisters, four grandchildren, and four great-grandsons.


George P. Mitchell, a billionaire philanthropist credited as the father of hydraulic shale fracturing, died at the age of 94 on July 26. His family said the death was from natural causes. A native of Galveston, Texas, he was the chairman and CEO of Mitchell Energy & Development, which was sold to Devon Energy for $3.5 billion in 2002. Mitchell drilled for natural gas in the Barnett shale, the site of the first successful fracing application that resulted in the viable production of natural gas. Since then, fracing has revolutionized the nation’s domestic energy supply outlook. Mitchell, a veteran of World War II, was also a real estate developer. In 1974, he created The Woodlands, a 25,000-acre forested community filled with parks and a 1.4-mi-long manmade canal, north of Houston. The Woodlands now has a population of more than 100,000, and is home to leading oil and gas corporations including Anadarko Petroleum and ExxonMobil. Mitchell raised 10 children with his wife, Cynthia Woods Mitchell, who died in 2009.


Dana Gas has announced the appointment of Dr. Patrick Allman-Ward as the new group CEO for the company, effective Sept. 1. The company conducted an extensive executive search process after the retirement last year of its former CEO, Ahmed Al-Arbeed, who remains a board member. Allman-Ward is an international energy executive with more than 30 years of experience in the industry, in senior positions in the Middle East and the Gulf Region.


ABS has announced that James A. Watson, director of the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), will join ABS as president and COO of the Americas Division on Sept. 2. In this role, Watson will have operational responsibility for activity in North, South and Central America, and the Caribbean. Watson will take over from Robert Gilman, who will move to the ABS Group (ABSG) of companies as senior V.P. and head of Technical Inspection Services within ABSG Consulting.


Wood Group Mustang’s Onshore Business Unit has appointed Charles Johnson to the position of general manager, Bakken region. Johnson will oversee the growing Wood Group Mustang presence in the region from the company’s Minot, N.D., regional office. Johnson, a fifth-generation North Dakotan, brings 25 years of oil and gas experience to Wood Group Mustang, namely in tight formation plays in both the Bakken and Marcellus shales.


Pacific Drilling has appointed Cees Van Diemen as the company’s COO, effective Aug. 1, with responsibility for operating and technical support activities. Van Diemen has more than 34 years of experience in the mobile offshore drilling industry, and joined Pacific Drilling in 2009 as senior V.P. of Operations. Bob MacChesney will assume the role of senior V.P. and chief marketing officer, focusing on the company’s growing fleet of ultra-deepwater drillships.


Archer Limited’s board of directors has appointed David King as CEO. King has more than 30 years of experience in international oilfield services, and replaces Fredrik Halvorsen, who has been Archer’s interim CEO since January 2012. King has held numerous executive leadership roles, and worked most recently as president of Halliburton’s Completion and Production Division. He left Halliburton in 2010, after 32 years with the company, to become an independent consultant.


Greene’s Energy Group (GEG), a provider of integrated testing, rentals and specialty services, has promoted Mark Yuille to CFO of the Testing and Services business unit, announced President Eric Langlinais. Based in Houston, Yuille will assume financial leadership responsibilities that include accounting, treasury management and investor relations opportunities for the Testing and Services business unit of GEG. Prior to his new role, Yuille was CFO for GEG and, earlier, garnered notable financial and operational experience in various roles with GE.


FlexSteel Pipeline Technologies has appointed Tom Ferguson as CEO to lead the company’s strategic growth in pipeline solutions for the oil and gas industry. Before joining FlexSteel, Ferguson spent the last 25 years at Flowserve, managing and building global, multi-billion-dollar businesses. He has a diverse background, crossing a multitude of functions


Superior Energy Services’ president and CEO, David D. Dunlap, was honored as the 2013 Transformational CEO at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards gala for the Gulf Coast Area. An independent panel of judges selected 41 finalists from the Gulf Coast area, representing South Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, before choosing the final award winners.


UniversalPegasus International (UPI) has named Tim Brown as senior V.P., Business Development. Brown has more than 30 years of experience in the engineering and construction sectors. He comes to UPI from Jacobs Engineering, where he held the position of global V.P., Inside Sales and Marketing. Brown also worked for Fluor for more than 20 years, in various roles.


Scott Pellerin has been named operations manager of Pellerin Energy Group’s (PEG) Water Solutions business unit. Pellerin’s primary responsibilities include developing and implementing service programs, and training personnel on safe company product maintenance; negotiating service agreements; and ensuring equipment is operating efficiently. He will also manage the field service group, where he will oversee troubleshooting and customer training for produced water treatment equipment and solutions. Pellerin joins PEG as a former employee of Siemens, where he was employed for 13 years, and held various management positions., from marketing and sales to engineering and operations.
