NELL LUKOSAVICH, Senior Editor Held bi-annually since 1968, the Global Petroleum Show (GPS) brings together 2,000 exhibiting companies and 60,000 attendees from 95 countries to promote discussion about Canada’s oil and gas operations. GPS, held on even years, alternates with the Gas & Oil Expo, held on odd years. GPS 2012 will take place in Canada’s energy capital, Calgary, at Stampede Park, June 12-14. It will feature a technical program, training session, ePosters and panel discussions. In the past, GPS, hosted by dmg world media, has included a one-day business conference, followed by a 2½-to 3-day technical conference. This year, for the first time, SPE has partnered with GPS to launch the first SPE Heavy Oil Conference Canada. The conference, held in conjunction with the exhibition, was developed to respond to SPE members’ interest in a focused, heavy oil technical conference in Canada. “Canada is an important region for SPE, and heavy oil is an important and complex topic for our industry,” said Alain Labastie, 2011 SPE President and Engineering Advisor, TOTAL. “To better serve our members, we are bringing an annual heavy oil technical conference to Calgary. It is an ambitious undertaking, but one we know will bring great value to our members.” Along with a focus on heavy oil, GPS 2012 and the SPE Heavy Oil Conference Canada, chaired by Husky Energy’s Manager of Oil Sands Technology, K.C. Yeung, will also highlight international advancements. The conference will provide global perspectives on best practices and technological advances in the exploration and production of heavy oil. Topics will include fluid characterization, solvents, steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), enhanced oil recovery (EOR), cold production of heavy oil, in-situ combustion, environmental management of oil sands, steam and solvent hybrid processes, and reservoir evaluation. A full schedule of technical sessions is outlined in the accompanying table. In addition to the technical program, training sessions and ePoster presentations, Glen Schmidt, president and CEO of Laricina Energy Ltd., will deliver the keynote address. Entitled “Innovation to enhance the value of in-situ oil sands recovery,” Schmidt’s address will discuss innovations that enhance both the value and sustainability of in-situ oil sands.
