Software plug-in for petrophysics interpretation

dGB Earth Sciences and Argentinean geosciences company Geoinfo SRL have launched a new OpendTect plug-in for the incorporation of petrophysical properties into the seismic interpretation process. The CLAS (Computer Log Analysis Software) plug-in, developed by Geoinfo and through which well log petrophysics can be performed within OpendTect rather than having to be imported, will result in improved well-to-seismic ties, the enhanced calibration of seismic attributes to reservoir properties, more robust models, and the more accurate interpretation of 3D seismic data. With CLAS, seismic interpreters can edit well logs and generate vital information on oil in place through data on the saturation, clay volume, porosity, lithology and fluid content of the reservoir. CLAS will also allow net pay to be estimated from seismic attributes and will be able to use dGB’s neural networks plug-in to generate acoustic logs. The result will be the building of accurate models and improved acoustic and elastic impedance inversion.

HPHT turbine drilling technology

Sperry Drilling, a Halliburton business line, is introducing Turbopower turbine drilling technology, which, compared with a conventional mud motor, provides operators with the ability to drill in a much higher temperature environment and to achieve longer downhole life and produce better and straighter hole quality in their assets—at a lower cost per foot drilled. Turbopower drilling technology includes an extensive range of steerable and straight-hole turbodrilling tools and services, addressing performance drilling in holes sizes from 5⅝ in. to 17½ in. The technology is especially suited for hard rock drilling, high-pressure, high-temperature applications, sidetracks, including openhole sidetracks, horizontal and multi-lateral wells and underbalanced wells. Halliburton can design the appropriate bit to be used in conjunction with Turbopower drilling technology.

New process optimizes fracturing treatments

Halliburton is combining unique diversion technologies and pumping capabilities to create a process that helps operators achieve better long-term production from shale formations, thereby maximizing asset development. Called AccessFrac service, the new process optimizes fracturing treatments by helping assure that each perforation cluster in each interval receives the designed amount of proppant. Improved proppant distribution, better access to the complex network of both created and natural fractures and the installation of a highly conductive proppant pack can help improve the long-term production potential from shale assets. The AccessFrac process can help optimize both plug and perf and sliding sleeve treatments by achieving enhanced proppant distribution.

Offshore stackable riser guard

Trelleborg Offshore has developed a new stackable version of its innovative RiserGuard system. Providing a solution for rigs with limited storage space, it allows stacking of mixed dressed riser joints, while still offering the same high protection as the original system. Stackable RiserGuard joints can be stacked alongside buoyant riser joints in the same deck storage area due to strategically placed protective sections spaced within the RiserGuard. The system offers quick and easy installation and is impact and abrasion resistant.

Offshore drilling power module for platforms

Cummins Inc. announced that the new QSK95 engine will be configured as a ready-to-install Offshore-Drilling Power Module (ODPM) with 2.1-MW output. The 95-liter, 16-cylinder QSK95 enables the ODPM to generate dependable prime power with high-load-factor capability for oil and gas platform operations. The QSK95 engine is rated 3000 hp at 1200 rpm to align with a standard ODPM output node used for semisubmersible, jackup rigs, drillships and gravity-based production platforms.

Advanced sensors for downhole applications

Honeywell has expanded its Wing Union sensor portfolio with two new models designed to meet the changing demands of global upstream oil and gas exploration and drilling, where maximizing productivity and avoiding downtime are critical. The Model 425 sensor is now available with a higher level of accuracy so that operators can monitor downhole drilling conditions and detect pressure spikes more precisely, leading to quicker adjustments and greater control. This allows operators to drill longer, more productively and more efficiently. The Model 427 features a wider aperture design with its rounded edges allows a seamless flow of more viscous media through the critical sensing area, reducing clogging and buildup while providing consistent and accurate pressure measurements. Drilling productivity is increased and downtime is reduced, which optimizes overall operations.

Roller cone bits for geothermal and high-temperature drilling

Smith Bits, a Schlumberger company, announced the introduction of its Kaldera advanced roller cone bits for geothermal and high-temperature drilling applications.  Advanced materials technology has been developed to provide an engineered sealing and lubrication system for the drilling of high-temperature (HT) wells. A new range of advanced materials were developed, combined with an engineered design solution, to deliver improved bit performance in high-temperature downhole environments applications.  The bits substantially increase on-bottom hours, thereby reducing drilling costs in geothermal and HT wells. The seals are made from fabric reinforced fluoroelastomer composites, providing thermal stability and wear resistance.  An innovative grease compound was developed from synthetic base oils and functional additives to increase load capacity at elevated temperatures to ensure adequate lubricity of the bearing sealing system.
