With a properly designed well information system, operators can improve the drilling process through seamless planning, scheduling, tracking and measuring performance.

During 2008, Petron Industries Inc. introduced three advanced new tools to enhance the acquisition, management and dissemination of drilling information. RigFocus application software, RigBrain information manager and DrilNet/SP secure data portal are a trio of computer-based products that work together to promote efficiency in rig site data acquisition, data processing, report generation and communications, Fig. 1.

The proprietary application software provides a user-friendly, intuitive interface for quick and easy access to drilling data. All data is displayed in familiar formats with pre-designed displays. No special computer skills are required. Additional integrated features include both audible and visible alarm capabilities, precise time- and depth-based data, charting of selectable parameters and flexible printing options. Users can access and browse numerical well data through a data pop-up window. Data export is available as Log ASCII Standard (LAS) and Comma Separated Value (CSV) in time- and depth-based format.

The rig-site data information manager integrates all hardware to software interfaces, rig site communications, database connection and portal communications and can interface with rig control systems for data exchange via object linking and embedding for process control and Modbus. It includes powerful data import capabilities that make connection to third-party Wellsite Information Transfer Specification (WITS) data simple and reliable. The data integration feature automatically populates common information to standard reports. With less data entry, efficiency is improved, while reducing the frequency of errors and reducing costs.

The secure data portal is an enhanced server-based drilling information distribution system that provides access to real-time drilling data, historical data and operational reports from any connected rig to compatible workstations via the internet. It provides a safe, totally secure means to acquire, display, archive and communicate data from not only the service company’s drilling information systems, but also from any third-party system capable of providing a WITS compliant real-time data stream.

The secure data-portal server and client applications are designed to work together to achieve an efficient, high level of performance and a superior user experience. Data is transferred rapidly between server and client applications, yielding a smooth scrolling of time and depth charts over modest-bandwidth internet connections.

System security features include the use of Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encrypted data links, user logon timeouts and encrypted passwords. Satellite links include another layer of data encryption during data transport. Secure data-portal servers are located at an SAS70-audited facility. Each customer can manage its own users and have its own in-house administrator(s) that manage company users and user groups.

These advanced products are presently being deployed in several newbuild rigs by a major drilling rig manufacturer. WO
