Smith International, Inc., has elected Michael D. Pearce as president of Smith Technologies. He was previously VP of sales for Smith Bits. In 1995, Pearce joined GeoDiamond, which merged three years later with the company’s three-cone bit group, where he became VP of sales for the combined operations.

Knight Tools promoted Keith Alexander to senior technical support coordinator. Alexander was most recently Rocky Mountain regional manager for Knight Fishing Services in Casper, Wyo., and has more than 35 years of experience in the rental and fishing segment of the oil and gas industry.

David Asmus of Baker Botts was selected “Oil and Gas Lawyer of the Year,” and the firm was named “Global Oil & Gas Law Firm of the Year 2005” in Who’s Who Legal: The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers annual survey. Asmus is based in Baker Botts’ Houston office and is the firmwide chair of its oil and gas practice. George Goolsby, partner in charge of the firm’s CIS practice, joined Asmus on the list of most highly nominated oil and gas lawyers in the world.

Paradigm, a provider of advanced petroleum geoscience and drilling technology to the oil and gas E&P industry, appointed David Richard as president, Canadian Operations. Richard has a strong background in managing services and technology businesses in the oil and gas sector, and a solid technical E&P background. Prior to joining Paradigm, he was president and CEO of Kelman Technologies.

Knowledge Systems named Kevin Brady as VP, marketing. The company provides software, training and consulting services to E&P companies worldwide. Brady has over 17 years of industry experience in sales and marketing, program management, research and engineering and field operations. He joins Knowledge Systems from Gulf Publishing Co., where he served as publisher of World Oil magazine.

CCSI appointed Gary L. Brown as president. The company provides corrosion protection products and services to the oil and gas industry. Brown has been active in the industry for over 30 years and has held numerous senior management positions, most recently as president of CRP Balmoral Inc.

Two Gas Technology Institute (GTI) researchers received special awards from the American Gas Association (AGA) at the AGA Annual Operations Conference in Chicago. Glyn Hazelden, GTI R&D manager, and William F. Rush, institute physicist, received AGA’s Operating Section’s Silver Award of Merit, an honor acknowledging outstanding leadership, original authorship, and at least 10 years of continuous organizational service to the natural gas industry. Hazelden joined GTI in 2004, where he is responsible for projects in the areas of trenchless technology, keyhole operations development, gas transmission and storage, underground locating, obstacle detection and laser leak detection. Rush joined GTI in 1978, where he has been involved in a wide variety of project areas. Among other work, he helped introduce large-diameter coiled pipe technology into the US.

Thomas T. Terrell joined IADC as senior VP, business development. He has more than 30 years of publishing, marketing and business experience. Terrell was named senior VP of PennWell Publishing’s Petroleum Group in 1997, and retired from that post in December 2002. He had previously served as publisher of the Oil and Gas Journal.

Louisiana Gulf Coast Oil Exposition (LAGCOE) officials announced the election of a new slate of officers for the upcoming show. Al Thomas of Thomas Energy, Inc., will serve as chairman of LAGCOE 2005. Thomas was previously co-chairman. David Shealy, district manager for Hughes Christensen, was named co-chairman, and Howard Wilson, of Novus Louisiana, Inc., was elected treasurer.

Joe Loughrey was named president and COO of Cummins Inc. Loughrey has been with the company for 31 years, during which time he held a number of leadership positions, including executive VP, Industrial Business, chief technical officer and group VP, Worldwide Operations. Succeeding Loughrey as president of the Engine Business is Jim Kelly, who served as VP and general manager of Cummins MidRange and Heavy Duty Engine Businesses. Rick Mills was named president of the new Components Group. Mills has led Cummins Filtration Business since 2000. Rich Freeland has become president of the Worldwide Distribution Business, which combines Cummins International and North American distributors under one organization.


OBITUARY

Robert L. Whiting died May 4, 2005, in College Station, Texas. Whiting was a professor in the Petroleum Engineering Department of Texas A&M University from 1946 until his retirement in 1988. During his tenure, he became nationally recognized for his excellence in teaching. Whiting also served as a consultant in the fields of energy, reservoir engineering, drilling, production, oil, gas and geothermal valuation for a variety of clients, including multi-national companies, the United Nations, the US and numerous other governments.
